In this assignment you are asked to author a self-reflexive journal about how the culture you are immersed in affects you. This requires you to examine your daily routines in a new light, adopting the point of view of a foreigner for whom many of your actions and words would be puzzling.
As you live your normal everyday life, try to make notes (mental or otherwise) of any normal actions, expressions, and habits that would be strange, maybe even inappropriate, to someone not familiar with your culture. This may include also reflecting on your cultural heritage or context and how it influences you. As a goal, try to make one of these notes a day.
Periodically (I recommend weekly but the minimum frequency due will be approximately every other week), write your notes and reflections down on a Google doc or word document. The syllabus has detailed rubrics, but plan for approximately 2 (double spaced) pages of content per submission. The journal entries are the periodic summary of your normal life experience, and thus should not be hard to create. The difficult part is the switch in mindset!
That's it! Your cultural journal has two separate submissions due throughout the course. As your submission, upload your same Google doc link each time, or upload a new word document each time.
The format of this assignment can be very informal and relatively unstructured (like a real journal), but you will be graded on your ability to recognize your own culture's influence over your life. Bullet points format is acceptable, but full sentences and some depth of explanation is required.

I find myself exploring the complexities of my Indian culture and how it influences my daily life as I start my self-reflective notebook. I frequently ignore the oddities of my daily behaviors and expressions, which may seem perplexing to an outsider, because I am so deeply ingrained in this rich and complex culture. In Indian culture, welcomes are elaborate rituals rather than just polite gestures. A simple "hello" is insufficient. Instead, we bow slightly and say "Namaste" while folding our hands in a namaste. It could seem unduly formal or even confusing to someone unfamiliar with this technique. However, for me, it's a means to demonstrate humility and recognize the divine light that lives inside each person. Family ties are highly valued in Indian culture. It's not unusual for different generations to coexist in one home. My close-knit family may appear domineering to the outside world, but to me, it is a source of support and strength. A sense of community that is forged through our daily routines of eating together and conversing about our lives is embedded in my identity.
In India, there are celebrations virtually every month, making every day seem like a holiday. Our festivities, such as Diwali, Holi, and Eid, are distinguished by vivid colors, delectable sweets, and intricate customs. It could seem hectic and excessive to someone who is not used to it, but for me, these festivals are a means to reconnect with my cultural heritage and build ties with my community. I was raised in an Indian home where there was a rich linguistic tapestry all around me. My linguistic palette is broad, ranging from Hindi to Tamil and many dialects in between. While confusing to some, India's language diversity serves as evidence of the country's cultural richness and the value of good communication in our multiethnic society.
In Indian culture, rituals are more than routines; they serve as ties that bind us to our spiritual roots. These procedures, such as lighting a diya during Diwali or performing a hawan ceremony, may seem complicated or superstitious to outsiders. But for me, they are a chance to show my love, ask for favors, and find serenity amid the chaos of life. Indian culture places a high value on respecting elders. We often live with them to care for and support them as they age, touching their feet as a symbol of respect and asking for their blessings. For me, this custom is a means to express gratitude for their knowledge and counsel, even though it may appear unusual to others.
Our lives are significantly impacted by Bollywood, the Indian film industry. A cultural force molds our entertainment preferences, influencing everything from the music we listen to to the attire we wear to the dance moves we try. Our obsession with Bollywood may seem strange to someone who isn't familiar with its extravagance, but for me, it's a means to stay in touch with my culture's strong artistic tradition. I'm learning more about how my Indian culture penetrates every element of my life as I continue to take these notes and think back on my everyday activities. It's a component of my identity rather than merely a set of customs and rituals. I'm hoping that through keeping a journal, I'll be able to comprehend my cultural history more fully and how it affects and enhances my life (Nair, 2022).
