For my research papers, there are a few databases that I frequently use because I find that they are easy to navigate and filter through tons of information to zone in specifically to what I am interested in researching. I know these are reputable sites approved by Walden as credible sources. My go-to databases are usually Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Elton B. Stephens Company (EBSCO), National Alliance in Mental Illness (NAMI), and The World Health Organization (WHO). I am currently a Psychiatric Nurse working with the adolescent population, and there have been multiple cases of teens who have been admitted after experiencing psychosis or exhibiting violent behavior after smoking marijuana. Therefore, the peer review article of choice for me was Cannabis Use and the Risk for Psychosis and Affective Disorders. Quigley et al., 2020 confirmed, “The size of the effect is related to the extent of cannabis use, with greater risk for early cannabis use and use of high-potency varieties and synthetic cannabinoids.”
Using the Walden library, the database I used was EBSCO. There were no challenges for me since this is one of my favorite databases that I have used much prior to nursing school. However, searching for a specific topic can be time-consuming if not using sufficient filters. There are times too, when the search results may need to be more consistent. This database would be helpful to my colleagues because it is trustworthy, easy to navigate, and offers many filters, allowing quick, easy access to the information. I particularly like that EBSCO enables the reader to analyze the data in various ways and improves the consistency of the information from journals, magazines, books, and newspapers. According to the Walden University Writing Center, “Doing this will enable you to identify some of the subtle differences in the viewpoints presented by different authors and help you to better identify the gaps in the literature.”
I recommend using EBSCO to my peers because the information is written by experts in their disciplines, not journalists. “Their purpose is to advance scholarship in that field by publishing in-depth research studies” (Walden University Library, n.d.). This is especially important to nursing student.
It is free of charge. Many articles on the web cost money to access or require a subscription, which saves money and time because it is quick and effective. It also has many filters and the flexibility to browse by specific topics, your favorite authors, dates, and many other fields.

There are so many different fields of nursing that you can enter after school. Some of them you study in your educational and clinical years, others you don’t. My area of expertise is aesthetic nursing. Aesthetic nursing was not very common in the area I lived when I was out of school, nor did I learn about it in school. So, once aesthetic nursing came into my life, I had to become certified by adequately trained practitioners on my own time.
While searching for a peer-reviewed article about aesthetic nursing, I found an article that was perfect for me. I am obtaining my Nurse Practitioner to educate myself better, to own the medical spa I currently run, to practice dermatology in this clinic, and to hire nurses under me to work more of the injection side. As a result of the development of nursing clinical expertise, medical aesthetics has recently undergone incremental growth in independent nursing practice clinics (Evidence-Based Education is Essential in Medical Aesthetics Nursing, 2020).
Most that the article spoke on was better educating our nurses to be trained correctly in aesthetic nursing for our patient’s safety. As stated above, many clinics are opening that may or may not have trained nurses who are injecting people’s faces with substances that could potentially harm them if not injected properly. If patients are unaware of this, they may go to an unsafe injector.
While researching an article, I used the MEDLINE database. MEDLINE is an easy-to-use database that can search for any medical field knowledge. I found my research article quickly; the only downfall was that I had to sort through many. Knowing that I found a credible resource was important as well. Here are a few clues that will help you pick out journal article reference citations: two titles: a journal will have an article title and a journal title (Walden University Library, n.d.). The report I researched came from the journal Plastic Surgical Nursing, and the article is named Evidence-Based Education Is Essential in Medical Aesthetics Nursing.
Quality evidence-based practice initiatives and nursing care are based on understanding and evaluating the resources and research available, identifying gaps, and building a strong foundation for future work (Shellenbarger, 2016).
