The nursing shortage is a global problem, which affects the host country and the migrating nurse’s country of origin. Please develop a response discussing the motivation for nurses to migrate and the problems migration creates for the host country and country of origin.
The nursing shortage is occurring in the United States and most all of locations nationwide. Nurses tend to migrate for many reasons between developing countries. Motivators to nurse migration were linked to financial, professional, political, social, and personal factors (Dywili et al., 2013). I have worked with nurses who have come to the United States to work and bring their families as well. They have said there are more opportunities for them in our country and better financial benefits than in the countries they are originally from. They can provide their families with a better life than they had as children when they come to countries that are more developed than theirs. There are cons to having foreign educated nurses come into the United States because there are communication barriers, cultural differences, and different levels of education. Other issues can arise for the foreign educated nurse’s country because they will decrease the number of skilled nurses they have and that could potentially affect the care patients receive in their country.
Describe the process for foreign-educated nurses to achieve credentialing and demonstrate language competency in the United States.
The process for a foreign educated nurse to receive licensure in the United States is very lengthy and engulfs a lot of steps. The nurse must be able to prove they meet the educational requirements in the United States. The nurse should be able to take a foreign educated nurse’s class, pass an English proficiency exam, and pass the NCLEX in the state they are planning to reside and work in. This seems like only a few things that must be done, but they take a lot of time and encompass multiple things within each step to getting licensure in the United States. Once the foreign educated nurse meets all the requirements, they can begin to search and apply and accept a registered nurse position in the United States.
