This week’s lectures explore the controversial legal and ethical role that the healthcare profession plays at both ends of the human life cycle. Beginning of life issues may include an unexpected fetal demise, working through abnormal results from genetic tests, and abortion. Distinguishing facts and issues involved in clinical dilemmas at the beginning and end of life. These issues share a common point of controversy, centering on questions about life itself, i.e., what is life, when does it begin, and when and how should it end. Clearly, a free society cannot, and will never, unanimously decide these issues, and any consensus that society does reach on these issues will be fragile and fleeting. Individual opinions will be based on such factors as personal philosophy as well as religious, cultural, and family background. This week will have some controversial issues for discussion. Remember that we may all have a different perspective, but it is all perspectives that create a great outcome.
