Difference Between Individual Interviews and Focus Groups
Respond to two of your colleagues’ posts with a suggestion about using a focus group for their research idea. Your suggestion may include 3–4 interview questions to ask, considerations for sampling; or how to manage recruiting participants.

Difference Between Individual Interviews and Focus Groups
Collecting data through individual interviews and focus groups are two distinct qualitative research methods with each offering unique advantages and considerations. Individual interviews involve one-on-one interactions between the researcher and the participant, fostering in-depth exploration of personal experiences, thoughts, and emotions. This method enables the researcher to establish rapport, delve into specific topics, and adapt the interview based on the participant’s responses (Burkholder et al., 2020).
In contrast, focus groups entail group discussions among participants facilitated by a researcher, promoting dynamic interactions and diverse perspectives. Focus groups encourage participants to share ideas, debate, and build upon each other’s thoughts, generating rich data through social interactions and group dynamics (Ravitch & Carl, 2019). Selecting participants for individual interviews often involves purposive sampling, targeting specific individuals with relevant experiences (Onwuegbuzie et al., 2009). In focus groups, diversity among participants can enhance the depth of discussions, requiring careful consideration of demographics and characteristics to ensure varied perspectives (Walden University, LLC., 2016).
Consideration for My Study
For my study exploring the experiences of Alaska Native single mothers pursuing self-sufficiency in a tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, both individual interviews and focus groups could offer valuable insights. Focus groups could be beneficial for exploring shared experiences, cultural norms, and community dynamics among Alaska Native single mothers. Using a focus group for my study would allow for efficiency by gathering data from multiple participants (Onwuegbuzie et al., 2009). Engaging in group discussions could help identify common challenges faced by this specific demographic, giving participants a shared sense of belonging and enhance cohesiveness (Onwuegbuzie et al., 2009). Despite the benefits of utilizing focus groups for my study, there are many skills needed, and I feel I could not manage the group as well as record the data unless I utilized a trained moderator.

Qualitative research involves using open-ended questions to gain an understanding of the lived experiences, attitudes, perceptions, and opinions of people and the researcher can either use individual interview or focus group interviews to collect data. An individual interview is having a face-to-face conversation between the interviewer & interviewee who provide in-depth data collection about their feelings, experiences, and perspectives (Ravitch & Carl, 2019). Focus group interviews involves the researcher questioning a small number of people they can interact with and be questioned simultaneously about gaining insights about a particular topic or issue topic/interest (Rubin & Rubin, 2012; Walden University, 2016). Focus groups can allow interviewees to elaborate on their answers, cost effective, observe body language, and gain emotional connections with group members.
The purpose of my qualitative study is to examine whether adult Navajo men who are receiving evidence-based treatment service are culturally relevant. The study is to utilize individual interviews to explore the perceptions and experiences of participants about the services being received. The focus group interviewing can be utilized to gain insight from multiple individuals yet one-on-one interviewing would provide an in-depth perspective that is based on a level of trust between two individuals (interviewer & interviewee). Using a focus group would be cost efficient yet be time consuming and since the population I am interested in may include using their Native languge (which would be more time consuming to interpret). According to Onwuegbuzie, et al. (2009), focus groups require a moderator team and this involves being skilled in this domain, which I have never completed.
