What are four (4) areas related to the issue that you would like to see people talk about more? The four subjects related to Dengue fever that I would most like to highlight for people would be the increasing incidence of Dengue fever infections, the quality-of-life improvements from preventing the spread of Dengue fever, the burden of more developed countries to provide assistance to less developed countries, and the cost, benefit, and repercussions of aiding a country such as Ethiopia in developing infrastructure.
Why? It is no doubt that the cost of providing reliable water sources to Ethiopian residents would be exorbitant. In fact, recent estimates suggest that the cost of providing sanitary drinking water to the world’s 140 least developed countries would cost $114 billion annually (Unesco, 2021). This would average to over $814 million annually per country. Even knowing the cost of providing this infrastructure, the need cannot be overstated. In the city of Addis Ababa alone, prediction models estimate that the shortfall of sustainable water supply will exceed 300 million cubic meters annually. Converted to imperial measurements, this would be the equivalent of 65,990,774,489 gallons per year (Alemu & Dioha, 2020). When focusing on the entire nation of Ethiopia, the scenario grows far more concerning. In fact, recent surveys suggest that over 42 million people, of 43 percent of Ethiopia’s population does not have access to safe drinking water (Burgess, 2016).
What specific considerations do you want people to think about related to potential solutions to your issue? Given the information above, it is imperative to think about how difficult life is for individuals that cannot access safe water sources. For example, a recent study revealed that 61 percent of rural residents spend more than four hours daily retrieving water during the dry season (Whitley et al., 2019). Just providing this to individuals can completely alter the life of Ethiopia’s citizens. Not only does this provide drinking water, but it greatly increases the sanitary conditions of the nation. Currently, only 17 percent of observed households in a recent study had soap in their household. While I understand that the cost of this intervention might seem prohibitively expensive, I would ask if there were a moral obligation to assist an underdeveloped nation when living in a nation that has no understanding of these issues.
