1. Number of Canadian seniors who rely on particular income sources. Look up Table
11-10-0239-01 on the Statistics Canada website, and do the following:
a. Download data on the Number with income of those aged 65 and over, Both
sexes, for Canada as a whole, for the following six categories of Income source:
Total income, Employment income, Investment income, Retirement income, Old
Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), and Canada
Pension Plan (CPP) and Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) benefits. Be sure to
retrieve the data for the entire period 1976-2021. (10 marks)
b. From the same data table, download separately the Number of persons aged
65 and over, both sexes, for Canada as a whole, but only for the Income Source
Total income. (The number of persons is the same for all income sources.) These
data provide a count of the total number of seniors. (5 marks)
c. Using Excel, compute the proportion of seniors (i.e., the proportion of the number
of persons retrieved in part b) who receive some income from each of the
following five sources: Employment income, Investment income, Retirement
income, Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), and
Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) benefits. You can
express your answers in percentage terms if you like. (10 marks)
d. Use Excel to create a single graph that displays the five series you have
constructed in part c. (10 marks)
e. Compute the proportion of seniors with no income for the period 1976-2021 and
plot it in a separate graph. (5 marks)
f. Use your data and graphs to answer the following questions: What proportion of
Canadian seniors rely on each source of income, and how have these
proportions changed since 1976? Have there been any important changes over
time? What proportion of seniors has no income at all? Is reliance on government
sources of income more or less widespread compared reliance on market
sources? (25 marks)
2.Statistics Canada Table 11-10-0034-01 contains data retrieved from personal
income tax records, including the amounts taxpayers have deducted for CPP and
QPP premiums.
a. Download data on the Dollar amount claimed on income tax form for Canada
Pension Plan (CPP) and Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) premiums, for Canada
and for all ten provinces and the three territories, for the years 2000-2021. (10
marks)
b. Using Excel, compute the proportion of premiums each province other than
Quebec has contributed to the CPP over the years. (Be careful with the
5
denominator here! Note that Quebec residents contribute only to the QPP, while
residents of the other provinces and territories contribute only to the CPP.) (10
marks)
c. The Alberta government is considering the possibility of withdrawing from the
Canada Pension Plan and setting up its own Alberta Pension Plan, like that of
Quebec. On September 21st it released a report that argues that if it did so,
Alberta would be entitled to $334 billion of the CPP’s assets – more than 50% of
the fund’s assets, even though Alberta’s share of the Canadian population is less
than 12%. (The CPP’s net assets totaled $575 billion as of June 2023.) Does this
sound reasonable to you, given the contributions of Albertans to the CPP over
the years? Explain your answer. (10 marks)
