Marshall McLuhan writes that the “content” of any medium is always another medium. Do you agree with this point? Why or why not? Use McLuhan and one other author, along with an example of a media artifact of your choosing to support your argument.
Using either two Black Media Studies scholars OR one Black Media Studies scholar and one other scholar from our syllabus, discuss either: the impact of racial bias on technology and representation OR how we can use cultural studies (and race as a lens) to interpret the role of technology in society. Support your argument with a media artifact or technology of your choosing.
Using Arnold Pacey’s three part theory of technology, please describe the influence of culture on the development of a technological artifact of your choice. Use Pacey and one other author from our list to support your argument.
Expectations
Use a standard academic essay format, with an introduction, a body of argument and analysis with textual evidence, and a conclusion. In your intro, be sure to include a cohesive thesis statement that expresses your central claim(s) and briefly describes the evidence you will use in your argument. Conclude by returning to your initial claim(s).
Bear in mind that while we’ve mostly read excerpts from longer works, you aren’t required to engage with any chapters or other scholarly work we haven’t discussed in class, but you may mention other sources if it helps your argument.
Remember to cite the work of others (including texts we’ve read for class) using the MLA citation style. This includes the pieces of media you’re analyzing! The .pdf files I’ve made available should have the publication info included, but contact me if you need any additional details. Check the syllabus for links to MLA style guides.
Finally, remember to proofread your writing before submitting. Check the syllabus for resources available at Tech and online. I always recommend reading your work aloud to yourself!
