COM755 – Concept Explication Exercise I will discuss this exercise a bit more in class, but just to be sure, here are the various steps you should go through to complete this assignment: 1. As I mentioned earlier, I am asking you to pick one concept that you will focus on in this explication exercise. Make sure this is an interesting concept, possibly something new or a concept that has been used in previous studies but might need further explication (such as the concept of “interactivity” explicated by Kiousis, or maybe “information overload,” which I mentioned in class). Just remember, I will need to read this, and I don’t like to get bored ☺ 2. Conceptualization: Once you have identified a concept, search the existing literature and find as many theoretical definitions as possible for your concept. Use the existing literature to develop your thinking about the concept. How have others defined this concept? What are the commonalities or differences? Which of these definitions best fits your project? How do existing definitions (if any) have to be changed or adapted to accommodate your concept? Your analysis may take the form of a typology in which you further specify how your concept is related to or different from other similar concepts (e.g., interpersonal vs. mass vs. computer-mediated communication), or a conceptual map of the components or dimensions of the concepts. Think carefully about the different meanings your concept might have and then try to formulate a new definition. 3. Provide a clear and concise (new) definition of your concept. 4. Operationalization: Once you are done with defining your concept (= conceptualization), review the existing literature for possible ways to operationalize (or measure) your concept. How have others measured your concept in their studies? How can you improve on the existing measure(s)—are there ways to increase the reliability and validity of the measure(s) by using different measures, additional measures, more precise measures, etc.? Think carefully about possible measures and make sure that you actually could use them in a potential study. In other words, your measures should be realistic. Finally, make sure that you’ll explain why your measure(s) are an improvement over previous measure(s) (if any). 5. Provide a clear and concise set of measure(s) for your concept. 6. If you are thinking of using your concept in a survey study, make sure you’ll list the complete survey question(s) with answer categories. If you are thinking of an experiment, explain how the concept will be measured in an experimental setting. The same is true for any other research method you might consider (content analysis, qualitative analyses, etc.). In the end, I should be able to reconstruct the same measure(s) you are suggesting simply by reading your description of the measure(s). That’s it – length expectation: 7 to 10 pages, including references. The exercise will be due on Monday, October 15.
