We have a discussion and there is a Critical Reflection Paper on the documentary. Obviously you have to watch the movie before you can participate in the discussion or write the paper.

This movie was made in 2013 during the aftermath of the Great Recession. But all the statistics are accurate (in fact we are actually more unequal post-pandemic). And society is getting more divided along cultural lines.

But we are going to focus on the inequality. We have studied four major theories of ethics: Utilitarianism, Kant, Rawls, and Aristotle. (I don’t consider libertarianism an ethical theory).

Part 1: Critical Reflection Paper ( should be about 1.5 pages double spaced)

What would each of these theories have to say about inequality in America today? Is it justified? Is it good? Some will be easier to apply than others: Rawls may have the most to say. Aristotle has something to say about a strong middle class. Utilitarianism also has a lot to say about this issue. Kant may be harder to apply, but: are the corporate owners treating their workers as an “end in themselves” or are they simply using them for their own means to profit? Would the owners universalize the maxims that they are acting upon.

Those of you who have been studying hard all semester will have a lot to say in this paper. And you will not be able to fit it all in. So, focus on the most important aspects of what you have learned so far. You have to put a lot of thought into this paper.
