HOW TO ANALYZE THE EVIDENCE YOU HAVE COLLECTED AND WRITE YOUR ANALYSIS.
The instructions for this assignment have been uploaded below. I will send the required reading material later. Hopefully, we can work together. Thank you 🙂
Requirements: Mentioned in the instructions
Due by 11:59 p.m., OCT 3, 2023.
TOPIC: A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE GODS ENLIL AND SHAMASH IN GILGAMESH AS RENDERED BY DAVID FERRY.
MINIMUM LENGTH: 5 full double-spaced pages, with standard 1” margins top, bottom and sides and with quoted material taking up no more than ¼ of the entire paper.
STEP I: PREPARATORY WORK (20% of your paper grade): SUBMIT PREP WORK WITH YOUR PAPER ON OCT 3, 2023.
Before you plan or write your paper, go through the text of Gilgamesh in David Ferry’s edition and type out (or write neatly) in quotation marks on a separate sheet EVERY sentence, including repetitions, in which the names Enlil and/or Shamash occur in Tablets I-XI. (1-11; do not include tablet 12) Note down (in parentheses) the page of the text on which each sentence you copy occurs. (You might want to put all the references to Shamash in one list and all the references to Enlil in another since it is important to analyze each god separately.)
Your list of references to Shamash and Enlil MUST BE submitted by October 3rd. It will be graded in terms of its completeness and proper referencing. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COPY OF YOUR LIST ON YOUR COMPUTER SO YOU CAN USE IT TO CITE EVIDENCE IN YOUR PAPER. The list counts for 1/5 of your paper grade; the other 4/5 of your paper grade will be based on your execution of the analysis described below.
HOW TO ANALYZE THE EVIDENCE YOU HAVE COLLECTED AND WRITE YOUR ANALYSIS. (DO NOT WRITE YOUR ANALYSIS ON THE BASIS OF ANY OTHER SOURCE THAN DAVID FERRY’S GILGAMESH.)
STEP 2 REREAD AND INTERROGATE THE TEXT: Focusing ONLY on the full references to Enlil and Shamash in the text of David Ferry’s Gilgamesh that you have collected, analyze each reference by asking of it in turn and by noting down what it tells you in answer to all of the following questions:
1) What are the specific powers of Shamash and of Enlil as described in the text of Gilgamesh?
2) What aspects of life or nature do Shamash and Enlil each control in the text of Gilgamesh?
3) What are the characteristics (personal qualities or attributes) of Shamash and of Enlil as revealed in the text of Gilgamesh?
4) How does each god interact with humans, and how does he interact with other gods during the course of the whole epic?
5) What are the positive and negative aspects of each god?
STEP 3 WRITE OUT YOUR ANALYSIS: When you have made detailed notes about the answers to all of these questions provided by the references about each god you will have more than enough material to write an in-depth textually based analysis of the role of Shamash and Enlil in Gilgamesh. TREATING EACH GOD SEPARATELY, proceed to write out your analysis, based on the answers the text gives to the five questions you asked it.
STEP 4 PUT THE PAPER AWAY FOR AT LEAST HALF A DAY. THEN PROOFREAD IT.
(YOUR PAPER NEEDS TO ANALYZE THE SPECIFIC POWERS, AREAS OF CONTROL, ATTRIBUTES & INTERACTIONS WITH HUMANS AND OTHER GODS, POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF SHAMASH AND ENLIL IN DAVID FERRY’S GILGAMESH.)
HOW YOUR PAPER WILL BE ASSESSED AND GRADED. Your paper will be assessed on how well you execute the following REQUIRED ELEMENTS:
1. OPENING & CONCLUDING PARAGRAPHS.
Your paper should be framed by an opening paragraph in which you state your aims in writing the paper and a concluding paragraph in which you discuss how analysis of Enlil and Shamash helps to illuminate the meaning of Gilgamesh as a whole and may provide insight into ancient Babylonian (religious) culture.
The concluding paragraph SHOULD NOT MERELY REPEAT what you have said. Instead, raise new questions, give your views.
2. TEXTUAL EVIDENCE APPROPRIATELY CITED
You must cite textual evidence to support the main points of your analysis, but the supporting quotes should be brief and to the point. QUOTES SHOULD SUPPORT WHAT YOU SAY, NOT RESTATE IT.
(Give page references to all quotes in parentheses at the end of the quotation).
3. REFERENCE CITATIONS. AT THE END OF YOUR PAPER YOU MUST GIVE A FULL REFERENCE CITATION OF ANY SOURCE FROM WHICH YOU QUOTE, INCLUDING YOUR PROFESSOR’S POWERPOINTS.
4. FOCUS.
Papers should focus ONLY on an analysis of Enlil and Shamash in the text of Gilgamesh as rendered by David Ferry
.
5. AVOIDANCES.
AVOID OUTSIDE SOURCES, BUT IF YOU MUST CONSULT THEM, CITE THEM.
AVOID GENERALIZATIONS ABOUT LITERATURE, OR LENGTHY DISCUSSIONS NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO ENLIL OR SHAMASH IN GILGAMESH.
6. ANALYSE, DON’T SUMMARIZE OR RETELL THE STORY.
Treat each god separately; approximately 2 full pages of your paper should be devoted to each.
7. STYLE.
Your paper should be as CLEARLY, CONVINCINGLY AND UN-REPETITIVELY WRITTEN as possible, with correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, verb tense, and use of words.
Seek help from a qualified person OTHER THAN YOUR PROFESSOR to proofread and correct it with you
8. PROOF-READING. Your paper must show evidence of careful proof reading.
YOU HAVE 7 DAYS TO PLAN, WRITE, AND PROOF THIS PAPER. WRITING IS A PROCESS. DO NOT LEAVE IT TO THE LAST MINUTE.
