Dance is considered a “performing art” because, as important as it is for a dancer to have pristine technique, they additionally need to be an excellent performer. An audience member is not likely to be drawn into a routine if they are solely observing technique. Whether the performer is portraying a story or merely dancing for entertainment, there should always be a sense of vulnerability and outward expression. Misty Copeland performing in Marcelo Gomes’ Despertartes portrayed every element of dance. An example of this is how she used her space to create movement. Her transitions and stage movement were very prominent, and not only did she hit every stage direction, but she also used her arms and legs to use the air and space around her. She possesses and demonstrates a multitude of beautifully executed techniques such as her passe on point and constant turned-out position, which is part of the reason it was such a successful dance performance. The other reason was the expression and story that she portrayed throughout which allowed the audience to build a connection with her movement. Overall, it was a beautiful performance that did a great job of showing both technique and expression.
Dance holds significant importance as a performing art, serving as a powerful medium for artists to express their deepest emotions, thoughts, and convey profound messages. Moreover, dance possesses the unique ability to deeply impact an individual’s emotions and mindset, making it a truly transformative form of artistic expression. In my humble opinion, the motion of this piece can be described as a combination of both jagged and rigid movements, with occasional moments of smoothness. It is truly captivating to witness how this woman’s body responds to the music she hears. It’s almost as if her movements are a direct reflection of the melodic notes produced by the violin. Every time the violin emits a sound, she effortlessly mirrors its rhythm and intensity. Additionally, I couldn’t help but notice how she gracefully pauses when the music comes to a halt, creating a sense of anticipation and intrigue. The way she interacts with the violinist adds another layer of fascination to her performance. It’s truly remarkable how her every move seems to be in perfect harmony with the music.
