Research Assignment 1- Topic selection/Research question

First, start thinking about everything in the form of an inquiry. Why do things happen the way they do, why do certain things exist, why do people act the way they do, and so on. Notice the things that seem most interesting to you. In all course work, when a researchable problem is introduced (everything is researchable), think about how you might go about studying it and what you think might explain the problem. Your first task is simply to determine a topic of interest. It does not need to be a brand new, unresearched topic. Most studies deal with subjects that have been examined before.

To help select your topic, take advantage of your individual background. Do you have a family member with a particular “problem”? Do you tutor at-risk children? Did you grow up in a high-crime area? Each of these life experiences provides ideal and unique research opportunities. There is a precautionary note; however, you must be always on guard that a personal experience does not interfere with your ability to be “neutral” and “objective.” It is a priority as researchers to try and remain as neutral as possible and reject personal bias.

**Once your topic is selected, write a 1-page (double-spaced, APA format) paper on what the topic is, what your research question is, what your hypothesis is, your IV(s) and DV and how you might go about studying the problem (possible research type, quant/qual; exploratory, etc).**
