Rather than me posting a series of questions, each of you will instead develop a graduate level question (i.e., not simply one which can be answered via regurgitation and no original thought), and then you will answer the very question you composed.

60 Minutes and Fox NewsToward that end, even when the media has the truth, it does not always mean itwill reveal it. Subsequently, credible information the public and lawmakers reallyshould know has at times been discarded by the media for self-interests. A primeexample of this involved the TV news show 60 Minutes interviewing of JeffWiggand, a tobacco scientist and whistleblower. During this interview, Wiggandconfirmed what many had suspected for years, i.e. tobacco companies knewtheir product was addictive (Radford, 2003). Yet despite the interview andWiggandÕs testimony being corroborated with a mountain of evidence, medialawyers recommended not airing it for fear of litigation by the then extremelypowerful tobacco companies (Radford, 2003). Ultimately, 60 Minutesmanagement concurred with their attorneys and opted to kill the story for fear ofa court battle (Radford, 2003).The significance of this example is not in underplaying the mediaÕs fear of beingsued or that it is not a valid concern for the media, as arguably it is. What it doesshow though, is that the media does, and has chosen not to report informationthe public truly had a need and right to know. Ultimately choosing instead, theirown interests and bottom line, versus the courageous stance most media outletsportray themselves as taking. In all, this example, by what some may considerto be the flag ship of such news programs, shows how the media at times haskept quiet about factual information that the public really had a need to know.Contrary to the night after night ritual of broadcasting the most horrendouscrimes, and in turn only representing one percent of such crimes, which in turndoes little to give society an honest understanding of the crime problem. Thoughat the same time these charges placed at the media can be taken too far, andshould not be perceived as to imply all media andor those who work within themedia, are corrupt and/or afraid to tell the truth; particularly as there areinstances to the contrary. However, what most would likely agree on, is that the media, over the past 20 to40 years, has steadily changed the legal heroes from those such as Perry Mason, who used to defend the unjustly accused, to those of Jack McCoy on Law andOrder, where almost all the accused are guilty. Providing support for ZengarieÕs(2005) positioned that society’s views on the many issues surrounding crime andthe criminal justice system have indeed changed, and with that there issignificant empirical support for the notion that the media is the primary source9/21/23, 9:40 AMPage 1 of 2
