RESPONSE1
Describe an area of social work practice where crisis intervention could be utilized.
Hospital emergency rooms typically have a social worker available for crisis intervention (Selby et al., 2018). This social worker may work with case management for an adolescent who is expressing suicidal ideation and who has expressed a plan and intent and has been admitted for emergency psychiatric help.
Explain the steps necessary to conduct crisis intervention.
Kirst-Ashman, K and Hull, Jr. G. H (2018) describe a clearly defined five-step process for crisis intervention. First, the social worker should engage the client to establish a relationship (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). This first step of engagement builds rapport which Kanel (2015) defines as a relationship built on trust and empathy that promotes honesty and understanding for the client to the social worker.
The second step is the assessment (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). This allows the social worker to gather information from the client such as why they are meeting with the social worker, what the client is thinking and feeling, and obtaining a client history (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). In crisis intervention especially, during the assessment the social worker must determine if the client is at risk of causing harm to themselves or anyone else (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).
Planning is the third step in conducting crisis intervention (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). During this phase, the social worker and client work together to determine what would be most beneficial to create positive change in the client’s life at this moment. In crisis intervention, this includes evaluating how the crisis has affected not only the client but also those around them in their daily life (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).
After a plan is in place, the fourth step is implementation (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). During this phase, the social worker should help the client understand what the crisis is and how it exists outside of their emotional state (James & Gilliland, 2013). The social worker should help the client explore and allow their feelings to be expressed rather than ignored and repressed (James & Gilliland, 2013). Identifying successful interventions and skills used in previous distressing situations will allow the client to focus on strengths and build resilience (James & Gilliland, 2013). This is also a good time to discuss using new coping skills and solutions (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Finally, in the implementation phase, the social worker should determine what support systems exist to socially assist the client throughout this distressing time (Kanel, 2015). This could be family, friends, or community support groups (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).
The fifth and final step in crisis intervention is planning for future crises. Focusing on how the client has successfully navigated traumatic experiences and emphasizing to the client their strengths can help them avoid high states of distress in future crises (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). The social worker should also ensure to follow up with the client if possible (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). If following up is not possible, ensuring a referral or next phase of assistance is available to the client will also allow future support to exist (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).

RESPONSE2
Describe an area of social work practice where crisis intervention could be utilized.
Police social work would be a good example of using mediation and crisis intervention. Police social workers work with people who have experienced violent crimes or those in criminal situations. “Social workers would employ counseling tactics, provide support, and arrange for needed services, they work to de-escalate potentially violent situations — and calm victims so that they can process their experience, begin healing, and provide accurate statements” (Maryville University, 2023). Crisis intervention is used to reduce potential permanent damage to a person’s psyche. Crisis management is also in place to provide services and counseling to people who have experienced a crisis.
Explain the steps necessary to conduct crisis intervention.
There are 5 Steps in crisis intervention. Engagement, Assessment, Planning, Implementation, and Planning for future crises (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Engagement is used to build a rapport with the client and foster a relationship. Assessment is used to establish the reason for the client seeking help, and focusing on that problem. Planning is used to look at how extensively the problem has affected the quality of life of the client. Implementation is used to select any variety of techniques to assist the client in dealing with their problem. Lastly, Planning for future crises is used to create a plan for the client, in which they may have a crisis in the future (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).
