Friendship Exercise
1. Think of a close friend. Make sure you have a specific person in mind. Now, use the following response scale to answer each of these questions AS YOU THINK YOUR FRIEND WOULD. Mark your answers in the Friend column.
1= Strongly Disagree
2 = Disagree
3 = Slightly Disagree
4 = Slightly Agree
5 = Agree
6 = Strongly Agree
2. Think of someone that you know, but don’t like very much. Think of a specific person. Now, complete the questionnaire as you think this person would. Put these ratings in the “other” column.
3. Now complete the questionnaire to reflect your own personal attitudes. Put these ratings in the “self” column.
4. For each item: Compute the discrepancy between your ratings and your friend’s ratings. Just keep track of the difference, it doesn’t matter who had the higher number. Now add these discrepancy scores across the 12 items. (Note that you should find the discrepancy separately for each item and then total these discrepancy scores. Remember, when calculating the discrepancy scores ignore the sign. It doesn’t matter which person would have the higher rating; all that matters is how different the two people’s ratings are).

7. Use the following scale to indicate how much your friend likes you.

8. Use the same scale to indicate how much the other person (nonfriend) likes you.
9. List three to five adjectives to describe your friend.
10. List three to five adjectives to describe the other person.
Interpretation
Write a brief (1 or 2 page) description of what your answers suggest about your friend and the person you don’t like as much. Report the two discrepancy scores, the ratings of how much you think each person likes you, and the adjectives you used to describe each person. Also address the following issues.
1. Is there a difference in the degree of attitude similarity between you and your friend and between you and the other person? Which person has attitudes that are more similar to yours.
2. Does one of the two people like you more than the other person does? Which one likes you more?
3. Did you use different traits to describe the two people? How do the traits you used compare to the kinds of traits that people prefer (trust, warmth, competence, and lots of specific positive and negative traits listed in the PowerPoint notes for Friendship?
