Clinical Field Experience B: Targeted and Explicit English Language Instruction
Order Instructions
Assessment Description
English language learners need meaningful instruction that targets language objectives and explicitly teaches aspects of the English language. This is especially vital given the complexity of academic language and the language proficiency skills required to achieve in school. Targeted ELD instruction, also known as Designated/Dedicated ELD or ESL/ESOL instruction, allows educators with specialized knowledge and background in working with ELLs the opportunity to deliver explicit English language instruction to accelerate language learning.
Allocate at least 4 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Review the video recording instructions in Topic 6 Clinical Field Experience C. If necessary, distribute the “Video Recording Permission Requests.”
Part 1: Targeted ELD Observation and Interview
Observe at least one hour of targeted ELD instruction for the ELL student previously identified with your mentor. Focus your observations on the following:
The ELL student’s comfort level within the learning environment
Any connections the teacher makes to the cultural or linguistic assets of the ELL student
Language domains the ELL student engages in (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
Activities or engagement strategies
How the ELL student meets the language objectives
Take notes during your observation as you will provide them when submitting this assignment.
Following your observation, interview the teacher who delivered the targeted ELD instruction. In addition to discussing the lesson you observed, include the following questions in your interview:
Where, when, and how often does the ELL student receive targeted English instruction? What determines these factors?
How does the ELL program model of your school affect how ELLs are taught and the type of instruction they receive?
How do you use the English language proficiency/development standards to guide instruction?
How do you determine language objectives for each lesson?
How do you ensure you are providing comprehensible input for ELL students?
How do you adjust your delivery or presentation of ELL instruction? (e.g., rate of speech, repetition, wait time, use of gestures, avoiding idioms and slang)
What strategies and technology do you use to support your ELL students in developing academic language, vocabulary, and literacy skills?
How do you address grammar and error correction?
How do you monitor student growth in the development of the English language?
Why is it important to provide targeted and explicit English language instruction for ELLs?
What kinds of challenges do you and your school face in ensuring ELLs are achieving and meeting their language goals?
Take notes during your interview as you will provide them when submitting this assignment.
Part 2: Planning for GoReact
Collaborate with your mentor to plan one-on-one instructional time with the ELL student in Topic 6 Clinical Field Experience C. The instructional time must be a minimum of 20 minutes and can include activities that preview/pre-teach, practice/apply, or reteach content area learning with language goals in mind.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Part 3: Blog Post
Using findings from your observation and interview, create a 500-750 word blog post on the topic of targeted ELD instruction and how to ensure schools and teachers are intentional in addressing language acquisition needs. Include the following:
A headline/title that captures the reader’s attention.
A hook, or succinct introduction that is persuasive.
Short paragraphs, clear topics, and relevant graphics. Use of bullet points where appropriate.
Personal connection to the topic, reflecting on the observation and interview from this field experience and referencing findings explicitly.
Explanation of the challenges schools and teachers face in ensuring ELL students are provided targeted and explicit English language instruction that supports language acquisition.
At least 5-7 suggestions for how schools and teachers can focus on English language acquisition needs and ensure meaningful targeted and explicit English language instruction.
Submit your observation and interview notes and blog post in one document.
