Write a working thesis (a thesis that is “under contruction”) statement: what do you guess that the advertisers assume each group values? What is significant about how the ads are similar and/or different about the assumed values?
Preparation:
It is now time to move on the to the writing portion of our first essay unit. You need to be finding possible ads that you can use to write an essay on. Remember, either you should choose two ads, one selling a product to a woman, and one selling a very similar product to a man, or you can choose 3-4 ads selling the same type of product to one gender. You need to know where the ads were published, and they need to be full page ads like those found in a magazine (like the ones I have dissected in the videos).
Please look again at the prompt for essay one.
I HIGHLY encourage you to email me your chosen ads to get my opinion on if they work for your essay. Too often a student will be having trouble organizing and writing his/her essay, and it is because his/her ad choices needed to be stronger.
Once you have picked out your ads, and checked with me on your choices, then you need to complete the Essay One Pre-writing. This is an assignment that will help you to organize your thoughts about the ads themselves. You will be turning this in by Sunday night at 11pm.
Instructions:
In a separate word document, please answer the following questions. We will be using this information to outline your essay, so try to keep it as organized as possible. Generally this detailed prewriting takes a couple of pages to complete.
Write a working thesis (a thesis that is “under contruction”) statement: what do you guess that the advertisers assume each group values? What is significant about how the ads are similar and/or different about the assumed values? What does the way the advertisers sell to your specific audience(s) say about how men and or women are portrayed in the media?
Gather Information: For each of your chosen ads, answer at least five of the questions listed here in Finding Ads’ Hidden Messages. Also, see if you can determine which Fowles’ appeals apply to each ad. Write down significant quotations from the reading that you might be able to use in your paper. Remember, please credit any idea you get from a reading or film.
Organize your information: Make and fill out a Venn Diagram like the one illustrated below. Consider the ways in which the ads are similar and different. (If you are comparing three ads, then add a third intertwining circle)
4. Think about the evidence you have found and rewrite your thesis: what do advertisers assume each group values? What is significant about how the ads are similar and/or different? What does the way the advertisers sell to your specific audience(s) say about how men and or women are portrayed in the media? You will use evidence from the ads to support your thesis. This is the prompt for Essay 1 with directions on how the paper should be.
ASSIGNMENT:
We have read and viewed many different articles and films that reveal how companies use advertising to not only market their product but also how to market to specific/different groups. Now it will be your job to investigate some advertisements on your own and assess the assumptions advertisers make. Your goal in this essay is not necessarily to judge the effectiveness of the advertisements, but rather to compare and/or contrast the ads and come to a thesis that clearly states the point you are trying to make about both ads or your group of ads.
*As you analyze the target groups, you will need to consider the publication in which you found each ad. Be sure to include the title and date of the publication(s) in your essay. You MUST know where the ad was originally published in order to use it. Ads must be print ads published in the last 5 years, preferably from the US.
Please choose one of the prompts below with which to guide your essay focus:
Analyze the similarities and differences in the ways two ads sell similar products to men and women (One selling a product to men, and one selling a similar product to women). In your thesis, answer the question, What do the advertisers assume each group values, and what does this say about how men and women are seen in media and our culture? Then consider your findings in terms of the readings we’ve discussed and the films we’ve watched. In your paper, refer to at least one of the readings.
Choose three or four ads (for similar products) that are targeted at either men or women (ex: analyzing three cologne ads geared towards men) Then discuss how you think the advertisers are targeting this group, drawing on at least one of the readings. Again, your thesis will address what each advertiser thinks the reader values and how this highlights how that gender is seen/portrayed in media and our culture. Compare and/or contrast the advertisers’ strategies for appealing to this group.
DIRECTIONS: WRITE A WELL-ORGANIZED AND DEVELOPED ESSAY OF 4-5 DOUBLE-SPACED PAGES ON THE ABOVE TOPIC (PAPERS LESS THAN 4 PAGES WILL BE MARKED DOWN). YOUR PAPER SHOULD FOLLOW MLA FORMATTING FOR IN-TEXT CITATIONS AND BE IN 12PT TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT WITH ONE-INCH MARGINS. YOUR PAPER SHOULD ALSO INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
A title
An Introduction that introduces the topic and states your paper’s thesis
A clearly stated argumentative thesis. (Something more specific than “The advertisers use many different strategies to appeal to women in the ads I have chosen.”)
Body paragraphs that include both your own critical thinking/analysis, and evidence from outside sources.
Correctly cited direct quotations from at least one of our assigned readings. (For a paper of this length you should include at least 3 quotes from the readings we have done.)
A conclusion
A Works Cited Page
** Take Note- You will be attaching your analyzed ads to the back of you essay, so you do not need to spend the majority of your paper explaining each ad in great detail. We will be spending time in class investigating helpful ways to organize your paper and finding the most effective way to expose the advertisers’ assumptions.
