1. For this assignment, I reviewed the website of Weems Community Mental Health Center. This healthcare organization offers various services for the mental health patient population. They offer services for children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. They also offer alcohol and drug programs and prevention programs for these populations. Evidence-based practice frequently appeared on the website but was more in-depth under the “services” tab.
Weems Community Health Center (WCMHC) offers multiple community-based mental health services, which have been shown to increase help-seeking behavior and decrease hospitalization (Matsea et al., 2022). The deinstitutionalization movement has led to an increase in community-based services (Almi et al., 2020). The community services provided by WCMHC include patient education services, mobile crisis response, employee assistance programs, prevention programs, supported employment programs, and a crisis stabilization unit (Weems Community Mental Health Center n.d.). Community-centered care can treat people earlier in their mental health diagnosis and provide care that coincides with their daily lives without disrupting their day-to-day schedules (Carrandi et al., 2022).
The information on the website did change my perception of the healthcare organization. I knew they had a mobile crisis response team, an inpatient crisis stabilization unit, and provided outpatient therapy, but I did not know they offered all these other services. I have lived in one of the communities this organization serves my whole life and have never heard of some of these programs, so that alone makes me feel as though they are underutilized. As to why they are underutilized, it would require further research. It could be because of non-compliance by patients, a lack of funding, or a combination of both. It could also be related to a lack of knowledge of referral sources. Healthcare providers may not be aware of these programs, so they do not refer their patients to them. The healthcare organization could provide more education to the community to increase the utilization of these programs.

2. American Public Health Association (APHA)
Health Care Organization
The American Public Health Association is a network of health care professionals in the United States who share a commitment to advancing the health of all individuals and communities, strengthening the field of public health, and advancing evidence-based public health practices and strategies. The group tries to make public health occupations more desirable. The APHA strongly supports evidence-based policies and practices in public health. No other organization comes close to replicating the American Public Health Association's efforts to improve public health in terms of length (more than 150 years), variety of membership, and potential effect on federal policy.
APHA's Mission and Vision
The goal is to improve public health and promote health fairness, while the ambition is to make the United States the healthiest nation in the world within a single generation.
APHA and Evidence-based Practice Medicine (EBP Medicine)
The website of the American Public Health Association (APHA) explains that evidence-based practice is used as the foundation for the association's healthcare endeavors. Hundreds of public health experts attend their Annual Meeting and Expo each year to discuss the most current results of EBP-based research (American Public Health Association (APHA), n.d.). The American Public Health Association (APHA) similarly prioritizes exchanging ideas on pressing public health topics on its website. COVID-19, Ebola, and global health are only a few examples; there are many more, including chronic illnesses and climate change.
The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) and The Nation's Health are both published by the American Public Health Association (APHA). The yearly journal Public Health, published in the United States, is widely recognized as the leading peer-reviewed publication for public health scholars and practitioners. New and current issues are contextualized, and research and practitioner experience are weighed greatly. According to the Special Libraries Association's Biomedical & Life Sciences Division, this journal is among the top 100 most significant in biology and medicine. This book provides thoughtful comments and innovative research on today's most serious public health challenges. In light of this, this healthcare provider provides evidence-based practice (EBP) study publications.
Finally, Explain Whether the Information You Discovered on the Healthcare Organization’s Website Has Changed Your Perception of the Healthcare Organization
The American Public Health Association (APHA) offers many solutions for overcoming institutional and cultural obstacles to EBP and practice-based research in state and local healthcare settings in a policy statement on evidence-based practice (EBP) published on its website. Fostering stronger cooperation between academic institutions and groups involved in public health practices is one of these strategies, as is expanding public health organizations’ access to relevant research resources and improving the availability of financial assistance (American Public Health Association (APHA), n.d.). This changed my perception of the Healthcare Organization.

3. Growing up in Southern Minnesota, I have done all of my doctoring at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. For those that are not familiar with them, they are a giant hospital with many different specialties as well as researchers. On their homepage, if you go under “patient centered care” there is a part of the website that states that there are more than 12,000 clinical trials being worked on at Mayo right now (Mayo Clinic, n.d). These are being done not just to develop new treatments for patients, but also to develop the next best practice to help providers and nurses to improve their practices.
Mayo Clinic’s primary value is “the needs of the patient come first” (Mayo Clinic, n.d). While that is not specifically evidence-based practice, it shows that they are making patient centered care a priority and treating each patient uniquely. Kim (2023) writes that in order to have proper patient centered care and have an institution providing the best evidence-based practice, it is crucial that patients are made aware of the current evidence-based practice in their care, but allowing them the autonomy to make their own decisions. Mayo Clinic’s vision is “transforming medicine to connect and cure as the global authority in the care of serious or complex disease” (Mayo Clinic, n.d). In order to truly transform medicine, Mayo Clinic has continued to research different diseases and identify not just the causes but also the ways to treat these.
I would argue that Mayo Clinic is grounded in Evidence-Based practice. I feel that they are because they have been involved in the ground breaking research for many different topics such as awake brain surgery and cerebrovascular surgery. Pascual et. al. write that awake brain surgery can help to protect eloquent sites of the brain when operating in these areas (2023). Mayo Clinic has adopted this practice for brain tumors that are near these sites in the brain to remove as much as possible to help the patient while not causing any damage. Another thing that Mayo Clinic has started to do is using updated imaging while intraoperative in spine surgery cases to help make sure that they have their screws in the correct placement, make sure that they have all of the disc removed, and they can also use it to establish that they are at the correct level when operating. Dablouk et. al. write that by utilizing the preoperative imaging as well as an intraoperative image, it can help to prevent wrong level surgery (2019). While not common, wrong level surgery can happen and Mayo Clinic is helping to prevent this by utilizing intraoperative imaging.
I do not think that this information has changed my perception of Mayo Clinic as an organization. I have known that they are very focused in research and that they are slow to change policies. Mayo Clinic will often do their own research to make sure that the new evidence-based practice is truly the best way to do things.

4. Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research (CHR)
Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research (CHR) is an organization in Portland, OR, that is focused on advancing knowledge to improve health and disease processes. This organization is known to have extensive experience in key cross-cutting areas, such as systematic reviews in preventive services and genomic test evaluations, and focused expertise in methods development (Kaiser Permanente, n.d). Evidenced Based Practice (EBP) is used by Kaiser Permanente Center for health research as they have stated it in their mission statement, The Kaiser Permanente Evidence-based Practice Center (KP EPC) is one of nine centers nationwide to be designated as an official EPC by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (Kaiser Permanente, n.d). This organization has four key pillars listed on their website and it includes; Quality and Safety, Leadership, Professional Development, and Research/Evidence-Based Practice (Kaiser Permanente, n.d). Their infrastructure establishes preparations through methods and approaches through which their mission statement is achieved.
The KP EPC is effectively grounded in EBP based on their philosophy to synthesize available scientific evidence on health care topics by conducting evidence reports, including systematic reviews, comparative effectiveness reviews, technical briefs, technology assessments, modeling, and decision-analyses (Schwartz et al., 2018). They have successfully provided a foundation and expertise essential to support evidenced based research. According to Lin et al., numerous reports provided by the organization deliver comprehensive, evidenced-based information on common, costly medical conditions and new healthcare technologies and strategies by integrating the evidence and aiding the translation of evidence-based research findings (2023).
The information I discovered on the KP EPC website did not change my perception of this healthcare organization. This organization has continued to widely use evidence-based practices and recommendations regarding preventive services to improve health for people nationwide (McHugh et al., 2017). Upon reviewing KP EPC, it has only broadened my perspective on EBP and provided me with an extensive knowledge of substantial scientific literature on a wide spectrum of clinical and health services topics. With the continuing use of innovative strategies involving synergistic combinations of strategies and systems approaches, evidence based practices will continue to be beneficial to the healthcare community and the general population.
