Brief background of the psychological phenomenon/theories (you will need references).

Once we’ve complete the lab each week, your goal is to write up a 5-8 page lab report paper. Your reports will focus on 4 things:

Brief background of the psychological phenomenon/theories (you will need references).

What you did in the lab (describe the lab).

What you found (include your own findings & results from excel when appropriate).

Real world implications and limitations of lab.

Lab reports are expected to include the following elements and I will be providing formative feedback based on each:

Title page

Topic background (including in-text citations/references)

Lab description (procedures & materials)

Data results (describe excel results & APA tables/figures)

Conclusions (including implications & limitations)

References page

APA style/format

Grammar & mechanics

Papers must follow APA Style (please follow the FREE grammar and style guidelines here) and should be approximately 5-8 pages in length (including title page, images, and references). They must be organized – by that I mean they cannot simply be streams of consciousness. I should see a definite structure to your paper – your introduction should state the points you intend to make, the body paragraphs should make those points, and the conclusion should wrap them up and review them. Papers that do not have organization will require revisions and (depending on the circumstances) students may be required to visit the writing center. Get the paper done right the first time by following this advice:

Use the readings/references provided in class (and don’t forget to cite them in text!)

Outline your paper ahead of time, thinking about the points you want to make.

Write your paper, then check for formatting and grammatical errors (read aloud).

Verify that your paper’s structure is clear – for example, ask a peer to read it and tell you what points you were trying to make. If your peers can’t figure out what you intended to say, neither can I.

As a reminder, in this course you will be receiving qualitative and formative feedback on the specific elements listed above, so you will be expected to use this feedback to improve the quality of your lab reports. I need to see that you’ve taken considerable time and effort in writing your lab reports, and you may be asked to revise them if I find major concerns with your writing. I expect the lab reports will take, on average, about an additional 2-4 hours outside of class to complete by the time you analyze any additional data, research the paper, and write it up.
