Your Reflection Papers will provide you an opportunity to work toward the submission of your final paper where you will present information on a disparity or inequity facing an African American subpopulation.

For this first Reflection Paper, you will identify a health issue that impacts an African American subpopulation at a worse rate than whites. This subpopulation can be broad (e.g., women, children, adolescents, college students, people over the age of 65, transgender individuals) or more narrow (e.g., women in the Southeast, children between 8-17, adolescents in rural communities, men over the age of 65). However, you will need to narrow your population to a specific area, such as a state, region of the U.S., county, etc. Remember, you will need to be able to find concrete data on this population, so spend time reviewing the “Common Sources of U.S. Health Data” as well as data that’s available from the health department of your selected state.

Next, write a 2-3-page paper (double-spaced) where you:

Describe the health issue in detail.

How does someone get it?

What problems does it cause?

Do people die from it? Become disabled? Have long-term problems?

Describe the subpopulation in detail.

How big is this population?

What makes the population more susceptible to the health problem?

Why are they more at risk?

Describe the area of focus in detail.

What’s the community, county, state, U.S. region of interest?

Where is it located?

What are some of the characteristics of that community?

How does it contribute to the health issue?
