Contribute your initial post to our discussion by Friday, 11:59 p.m. In your post please include the following:
Describe two message that qualify as nonverbal communication and one that is a verbal message. Briefly explain the difference between the two types of messages (see pages 166-167 in textbook).
Consider that you are preparing for an important job interview. Name two important nonverbal functions to keep in mind (see pages 172-178 in textbook) for the interview and why. Overall, what suggestions can you give to appear confident using the various types of nonverbal communication (see pages 166-174 in textbook)?
By 11:59 p.m. Sunday, please respond to at least two posts in our discussion.
CANVAS DISCUSSIONS
If you would like to learn a bit about Canvas discussions first, check out How do I reply to a Discussion? and How do I view and sort Discussion replies in the Canvas Guides. Here are a few useful buttons to play with:
GRADING
Your primary post needs to be 220-250 words and contributes specific ideas to the conversation. The two responses to others need to be 100-130 words each and reflect on comment of that student in a meaningful way by reacting to the questions that were answered by a student.
A discussion rubricLinks to an external site. will be used to grade our discussions. Review the rubrics to see the expectations for your contributions and the corresponding grading.
At the end of the week, you will see a completed rubric alongside your grade. To view the rubric, use the “options” icon in the top right corner of this page to select the rubric. (If viewing the course via the Canvas mobile app, the rubric may not be visible.)
PART2-Discussion Theorist Tweets
A fun way to explore the theories is to bring their ideas into contemporary society. To do this you will be creating mock tweets in the discussion board and replying to them as if you were one of the theorists. As the theorist, write in the first person, for example it should start with “I believe…” (state one fact that represents the theorist you are pretending to be, one or two sentences). Keep it short and simple.
Create a Twitter Handle (screen name) for the theorist you picked. If given a social media account, what might they post? How might other theorists respond? Complete one original post from the Point Of View (POV) of that theorist (one fact that represents the theorist you picked) then reply to at least one peer still being the theorist that you picked
Remember:
First, pick your theorist. Then, reply to the this prompt as your chosen theorist, composing a short statement (one or two sentences) that summarizes one important fact of that theory, keep your tweet short, 1-2 sentences and add at least one hashtag to your tweet to really emphasize your point. Look at the example below for inspiration:
Example of Original Tweet (I chose to “be” Piaget)
Jean Piaget @childrenarescientists
I believe that a baby banging and mouthing a rattle is learning in action. #sensorimotorstage #ECEfav
For your reply to another student this week you will then, find one other theorist’s tweet to reply to. Make sure you remain in character (so include your “theorist’s name” so we know who you are. Don’t worry your real name will automatically appear in your post so I will also know who you are for grading purposes). Here is an example so you can see what I am looking for:
Example of Reply tweet (Replying to Piaget’s tweet as if you are the theorist Albert Bandura)
Albert Bandura @bobodollresearcher (reply as the theorist you are pretending to be this week).
@childrenarescientists I would believe this if they first watched an adult do it. You should really watch footage from my Bobo Doll experiment. #powerfulstuff #seeingislearning
When responding to a peer this week, respond as a theorist with a different point of view, so that you can express a different aspect of their theory or your own theorist and make the point of how the theorists are different.
You may choose from these theorists: (feel free to use the “handles” I have added to identify your theorist or create one of your own).
Erikson @psychosocial, Pavlov @dogssalivate, Watson @poorlittlealbert, Skinner @operantconditioning, Bandura @bobodollresearcher, Piaget @agesandstages, Vygotsky @ZPD and Bronfenbrenner @ecologicalsystemtheory.
I look forward to seeing how creative you can get!
**Please respond to at least one classmate by the end of the week.
Here is a great video to watch on conditioning. One of my favorite episodes of The Big Bang Theory!
