Another area I want us to look at is the relationship between mental illness and substance use and addiction. What are the economic implications of neglecting, ignoring and not giving the right place to mental health care just like physical health care, to the individual, family, and the economy as a whole? It is reported that 19.86% of adults are experiencing a mental illness. Equivalent to nearly 50 million Americans. 4.91% are experiencing a severe mental illness. The state prevalence of adult mental illness ranges from 16.37% in New Jersey to 26.86% in Utah (Mental Health America, 2023). As social workers, I just want us to have a bigger picture of this mental health sector. While other professionals and some politicians are playing a game with mental health care and substance use, probably with the assumption that the impact is insignificant, and not a big deal. Social work as a noble profession cannot follow suit. Besides ethical responsibility, our mandate is divine, with a passion to save the poor, neglected, underrepresented, and vulnerable, people with mental disabilities, substance abuse, and all other related issues. You and I, and every other individual in this program are privileged to be sane, and among the group who are upright, going by the report that mental illness is common in the United States and more than one in five US. adults live with a mental illness, approximately 57.8 million as at 2021(NIMH, 2023). Permit me to use my first sentence in this article to open the floor for discussion in this class- The relationship between mental illness and substance uses and addiction. I want to believe that substance abuse and addiction can contribute significantly to the development of mental illness holding other variables constant. Substance and drug use have been discovered to affect and causes changes in brain structure in the same area as mental disorder (NIDA, 2021).
