Non-verbal communication patterns can hinder or enhance communication with clients. I have primarily positive non-verbal communication patterns. I make eye contact with people speaking to me and stop what I am doing so that all my attention is on the person relaying information. This allows me to focus on what is being said and retain the information. I also remain silent to reflect on what was said and allow a person to finish speaking or expressing their thoughts before I interject. I don’t particularly appreciate being interrupted and thus try to ensure I don’t interrupt anyone midsentence. I believe this allows for effective communication, shows that what the person is saying is important to me, and gives the person speaking value and validation. A negative non-verbal habit I have is crossing my arms. It is a position of comfort for me. I understand that it can make me appear closed off or that the conversation makes me uncomfortable, so I am working to maintain an open body posture. Many people have told me I have a friendly, expressive face and that I am approachable. They have also said I have a calm disposition. My non-verbal communication will enhance my ability to provide client-centered care and facilitate gathering information from clients. It will also help to build rapport and trust with clients.

Unique nonverbal communication patterns
I have some unique nonverbal communication patterns that I use as a nurse. For example, I often use a gentle touch to comfort patients. I also use a lot of smiling and eye contact to show that I am friendly and approachable. I am careful not to fidget or make unnecessary movements, as this can be distracting or unsettling for patients. I am also aware of my personal space and make sure to give patients enough room to feel comfortable.
Impact of nonverbal communication on client-centered care
I believe that my nonverbal communication patterns have a positive impact on my ability to provide client-centered care. They help me to build rapport with patients, assess their needs, communicate effectively, provide comfort and support, and promote healing and recovery. I am committed to continuing to develop and refine my nonverbal communication skills so that I can be an even more effective communicator and healthcare provider.
