Identify the piece of art and which kind of contextualization you will do.
Select one piece of art from the Gateway into the Visual Arts Resource or the online museums listed in that resource you would like to interpret. Include an image of the piece of art at the top of your discussion post. Also be sure to include the name of the artist and the name of the piece.
Based on the information in Required Resource #4, decide whether you would like to do a historical, social, personal, political or scientific contextualization for this piece. Doing some research in reliable sources, find some information to report in order to do the kind of contextualization you have chosen.
Then write 3-4 paragraphs in which you do the following:
Identify the piece of art and which kind of contextualization you will do.
Briefly describe three significant pieces of information you discovered in your research that contextualizes the piece of art you chose.
Describe two or three aspects of the art that you think are examples of how the historical, social, personal, political or scientific context appears visually and explain why.
Make a general statement about why you think it is, or is not important to consider the context of this piece of art.
Make sure to cite any quotes or paraphrases in MLA style.
Option #2 Music and Dance Identity Profile
()
Create a music and dance identity profile of yourself, in the form of a chart that shows the genres and purposes of music and dance in your life. Include these three categories:
Music styles you listen to for relaxation, working out, studying or in sacred settings.
Dance styles you experience that bring relaxation, exercise, artistic or sacred expression.
Music and/or dance you identify with your ethnicity or with your cultural or national identity.
Based on this chart, write a paragraph to explain how music and dance in your life contribute to your sense of who you are on multiple levels.
Make connections between the role and purpose of music and dance in your life and the music and dance you encountered in the Gateway into Music and Dance Resource.
Include two quotes about the elements of music or dance from at least two of the Required Learning Resources in your post.
Make sure to provide in-text citations for both quotes in MLA format.
Provide references for all sources in MLA format.
Option #3: Performance and Identity
Based on your reading in the Week 7 Required Resources and the Gateway into Drama and Theater Resource, think about the ways you perform your identity in daily life, then reflect on how that performance of identity impacts you and the world around you. Address the following questions in your initial post and provide at least one reference from the Required or Gateway resources to support your answers.
How does your performance of identity fit or not fit into the culture or cultures you are a part of?
How does your performance of identity work to support and/or challenge what is culturally accepted in the cultures you are a part of?
Have you ever had an experience where the way people perceive your performance of identity did not match up to how you perceive yourself? What happened?
Discuss a time when you felt like your identity, or “front of house” performance, did not match up with the context you were in. Did you change moving forward? If so, how? If not, why not?
Option #1: The Humanities
Much of the purpose of this class is to show students the value of studying the Humanities. Based on your review of this week’s Required Learning Resources and your participation in this class over the last seven weeks, please do the following:
Recall how you felt about taking this class during week one and make a short statement about your expectations at that time.
Reflect on your experience of taking this class and explain if you feel differently now about studying the Humanities than during the first week. How have you changed over the last seven weeks, if at all? For instance, was there any particular piece of work we covered that shifted your perspective on something? Did anything covered in the class affect you personally? Was there anything you learned about humanity that was unexpected?
Decide if this class has convinced you that studying the Humanities is relevant to your personal and/or academic growth, and explain why or why not.
In your discussion, include one quote from this week’s Required Learning Resources that either support your perspective or that you will refute.
Make sure to provide in-text citations for both quotes in MLA format.
Provide references for all sources in MLA format.
Creating in the Humanities
For this assignment, look through the Learning Resources from the entire semester and find one specific example of literature, art, music, dance, drama, theater, philosophy, or religion that you can use as inspiration to create something of your own that imitates it or presents a new perspective on it.
This means you should find a specific painting, poem, story, piece of philosophy, religious ritual, play, dance etc. Do not use terminology like hue, perspective, tempo etc. You are imitating or building from the work of another artist, philosopher, author etc.
You will share your creative effort with the class in a discussion forum. Please avoid repeating something creative you may have already done in the class discussions.
Step 1: Create your work
Produce a creative piece of writing, art, music, drama, theater, video, or audio during this semester. You may not use something you created prior to this class. Some examples are below. If you are unsure your idea will work, don’t hesitate to contact your instructor for feedback.
An alternate ending for one of the pieces of fiction in week 4.
A creative rewriting of one of the poems or short stories in week 4.
Your own poem that imitates the rhyme scheme or that uses some of the same metaphors as one of the poems in week 4.
A painting or drawing in the style of one of the artists covered in week 5.
Nail or make-up art in the style of one of the artists covered in week 5.
A video or audio of you performing your own version of one of the pieces of music from week 6.
A video of you performing your own version of one of the dances covered in week 6.
A video where you creatively retell a piece of literature from week 4 or where you present images to go with a one of the pieces of music from week 6.
A recording or audio of you acting out a short scene from one of the dramas mentioned in week 7.
Please keep any videos or audio down to 5 minutes or less. Take photos of your work to share if appropriate.
Step 2: Write about your work
Once you have produced your creative work, please address the following items in a short 300 to 400-word essay.
Identify the specific piece of art, literature, drama, music, dance etc., that you were imitating. If you are imitating a specific artist or author, provide the name of one of their works. If you imitate a particular time period or type of work, identify it.
Explain why you used this example as your inspiration.
Specifically explain what elements, techniques etc., you used from the original piece in your own, what you changed or modified and why.
Provide some general comments based on what you did in this exercise about how elements from the Humanities can be incorporated into your personal and job-related creative and thinking processes.
Provide a citation in MLA format of the Learning Resource where you found the piece you are imitating.
