GLOBAL NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY
ASSIGNMENT 1 QUESTION
This assignment is a written task where you will select a nutrition deficiency, and describe background information that will be used to support a critical analysis of a related intervention in assignment 2.
Diet plays an important role in the aetiology (and therefore prevention) of many preventable health conditions and disorders. For this first assessment task, you are required to research and describe a diet-related deficiency as follows.
First select ONE of the following global vitamin/mineral deficiencies below:
Iron deficiency
Vitamin A deficiency
Iodine deficiency
Write a report on your selected deficiency above to describe the following:
Aetiology of the deficiency/condition.
Epidemiology of the deficiency/condition. Include incidence and prevalence and a clear identification of regions (e.g., countries) most affected.
Food sources which contribute to the presentation of the deficiency/condition.
Groups most at risk of the deficiency/condition.
Determinants of deficiency/condition (social, cultural, economic and environmental).
Plus:
Identify an existing intervention (that has been implemented) that addresses this deficiency. You will need to provide details and critically analyse the intervention in Assignment 2. For this Assignment 1 you just need to identify and state the intervention. It is important that you select an intervention that provides details for you to be able to analyse in Assignment 2. For example, it may be easier in Assignment 2 to describe and critique an intervention within a single country than more broadly. This could be at a national or regional level. Global interventions are often guidelines, whereas details (e.g., study design, sampling methods, target group, aims, intervention methods, measurements, follow-up, etc.) should be available where the intervention has been implemented.
(Report presentation will have: Brief introduction, body, conclusion and intervention statement).
Length: 1000 words +/- 10% (including in-text references but excluding the end reference list). Referencing style: APA 7, a citation should be provided upon every mention of an idea, statistic, concept, argument, etc. that has come from someone other than yourself.
