Interview Questions1) What inspired you to be a leader?I was inspired to be a leader a few years ago by my experience with my supervisor. She showed me that I could make positive change with staff by having a caring and empathetic leadership style.2) Can you describe your leadership style, purpose, or essence?My leadership style is understanding, caring and empathetic. I make sure that my team knows that they are appreciated and that I am here to support them. I encourage clear communication verbal and written.3) What skills do you feel are critical for leaders in today’s complex environment?I feel flexibility is extremely important in todays complex environment. Things change quick and we need to be able to adapt/adjust. Relationships and relationship building are also very important. Folks need to know they are cared about and respected. Written and verbal communication is important too. Being friendly and personable in conversation is good. Written communication is very good for future reference.
4) What can you share regarding the importance of collaboration, communication, and conflict-resolution skills?Collaboration/working together is a very important part of leadership. Collaboration and working together builds respectful relationship. It shows that you value the rest of the team and their input. Conflict resolution skills help to keep things going. And to keep them going in the right direction. The importance of verbal and written communication can not be stressed enough. It is part of the working relationship and good for reference when needed.5) What is 1 thing you still struggle with today?I struggle with spreading myself too thin. I would like to support more of my team in a timelier way.6) What words of wisdom can you pass on to future leaders?Be empathetic. Lead in a way that acknowledges that you care about your team. You will find that your team appreciates and respects you when you obviously care about them and understand what they are dealing with.
7) What lessons have you learned over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic?Through the course of the COVID-19 Pandemic I have learned how very important human interaction is. We need to be able to see, hear, and touch each other. It is difficult to interpret tone in text, so we need to be able to see each other. I also got affirmation of my thought of flexibility being important. Things are changing rapidly and sometimes back and forth. We need to be able to adapt and keep it moving.
8) What kind of work culture do you think increases morale and employee motivation levels?A supportive and understanding work culture increases morale and employee motivation levels. When we are understanding with our teams it shows that we respect and appreciate them.
9) Working with a large team, it’s easy to get bogged down in day-to-day operations and not be available to engage with and visit your teams outside the office. How will you approach this to ensure open communication? How do you know if it’s effective or not?I approach this by sharing with my team that I am always available via phone, text and email. We have a weekly Zoom meeting that allows for me to touch bas and the team to touch base with each other. I do get bogged down and am not able to make visits as often as I’d like to. I know it is effective because my team utilizes the different ways to connect with me. I also see it is effective because we are successful in completing our work in a good way.10) What obstacles have you overcome and what have you done to overcome those?I overcame the obstacle of having a large caseload. The caseload that I am responsible for and supporting them with their caseload. I have overcome this obstacle by leaning on my counterparts and being supportive to my team.11) How do you build support for ideas/goals with people who do not report to you, and you have no authority over them?I build support with people who do not report to me by being there for them. They know that even though they are not on my caseload, I will support them in any way possible. Even though I don’t have authority over them, they respect me.
12) How do you know or detect if there is a potential threat to the organization?If there is a potential threat to the organization, we usually get word in writing. Or, we hear conversations at eh central office or centers.13) What values are most important to you as a leader?Empathy and understanding are the most important values to me as a leader.14) Can you describe a leadership challenge you overcame?A leadership challenge that I overcame was being too quiet. I was hesitant to jump in when needed. I would wait too long to let the team figure things out. I didn’t want hem to think I didn’t trust that they could handle it. Now I just offer support in a positive way. Let them know I am here if needed.15) When an issue arises in the organization, what skills and personality types do you believe are crucial?I believe patience, flexibility and understanding are crucial when an issue arises. We need to be able to trust that we all want what is best for the organization and be good to each other as we work through it.
