Nursing is a field of science where most students are eager to join and learn. This field involves offering care services for patients, therefore it requires one to be highly professional. To ensure that people getting into this field have the best standards, different stakeholders set the rules. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has developed nine Essentials that specify the essential abilities for nursing graduates at the bachelor, master’s, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) levels. These Essentials offer a thorough foundation for nursing education to provide students with the information and abilities they need to succeed in the changing healthcare environment (Giddens, Douglas, & Conroy, 2022). The discussion will cover the AACN Essentials and give examples of how I fulfilled these requirements throughout the nursing program. The AACN Essentials play a critical role in developing skilled and caring nursing professionals prepared to deliver high-quality patient care and propel positive changes in the healthcare sector. These principles include encouraging critical thinking through liberal education, embracing evidence-based practice, effective communication, and leadership principles. Essential 1: Liberal Education for Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice.
To improve one’s critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving abilities for nursing practice, this essential highlights the value of a solid liberal education foundation. A nurse with a baccalaureate degree should be well-rounded and have a wide range of knowledge to provide comprehensive patient care (Jokiniemi & Miettinen, 2020). The AACN claims that by including this requirement, graduates will have the intellectual tools they need to adapt to the rapidly changing healthcare environment.
One example of how I met this essential is by studying a course in psychology, sociology, ethics, and communication as part of my nursing program to improve my communication and critical thinking skills. I participated in debates, group conversations, and presentations that inspired me to consider healthcare topics critically and communicate clearly with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
Essential 2. Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety.
This essential focuses on developing leadership abilities and understanding healthcare systems. Nurses are essential in organizing patient care and fighting for patient safety (Rangachari & Woods, 2020). It ensures that graduates are ready to take on leadership roles and make improvements to healthcare organizations.
One example of how I met this essential is that during my nursing program, I had the chance to watch and take part in patient safety projects and quality improvement programs. I gained knowledge about the complexity of the healthcare system and how to work together with other healthcare professionals. I also learned how to apply leadership concepts to improve patient care outcomes.
Essential 3: Scholarship for Evidence-Based Practice.
This essential highlights the integration of research and evidence-based nursing practice for improved patient outcomes (Benton, Watkins, Beasley, Ferguson, & Holloway, 2020). Graduates are expected to use the most recent data and scientific discoveries to guide their clinical judgment and provide the highest quality of treatment.
To achieve this essential, I took classes and completed tasks that showed me how to evaluate research studies critically, recognize evidence-based treatments, and use evidence in patient care. During my clinical rotations, I worked on evidence-based practice projects where I collected and analyzed data to apply evidence-based interventions for particular patient populations.
Essential 4. Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology.
This essential mainly talks about using technology and healthcare informatics to improve patient care and communication (World Health Organization, 2021). To properly handle patient information in the modern healthcare environment, nurses must be skilled users of electronic health records (EHRs) and other digital tools.
To meet this essential, I learned about data security and privacy, received training on EHR systems, and gained an understanding of how technology may enhance patient outcomes during my nursing program. During my clinical rotations, I used EHRs to accurately record patient data, retrieve crucial information, and work with other healthcare professionals.
Essential 5: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments.
This essential demonstrates the importance of comprehending healthcare policy, budgets, and regulatory processes to effectively advocate for patients and navigate the healthcare industry (Bonnet, Bouamra-Mechemache, Réquillart, & Treich, 2020). To address inequities and advance patient-centered care, nurses must be knowledgeable about the larger healthcare landscape.
To meet this essential, I learned about health policy and how it affects patient care in my nursing studies. I researched healthcare finance options, studied reimbursement procedures, and discovered how nursing practice is impacted by regulatory standards. I can effectively represent my patients’ interests and affect healthcare policies by gaining this expertise.
Essential 6: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes.
This essential focus on the importance of interdisciplinary teams working well together and communicating to offer thorough patient care (Bok et al., 2020). To achieve smooth patient care delivery in today’s complex healthcare environments, nurses must collaborate with other healthcare providers.
I took part in clinical rotations during my nursing degree where I collaborated with doctors, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. Through interdisciplinary cooperation, I developed my ability to communicate, share information, and contribute my knowledge to provide the best patient outcomes.
Essential 7: Clinical Prevention and Population Health.
This essential emphasizes individual and population-level health promotion and disease prevention (Jadotte, Leisy, Noel, & Lane, 2019). To address population health needs, nurses are important in teaching patients and communities about preventive actions.
Throughout my nursing program, I took part in outreach activities for community health. I gained knowledge about how to conduct health checks, promote health, and inform patients about preventative actions. I can influence the health of the communities I serve by knowing population health principles.
Essential 8: Professionalism and Professional Values.
It insists on the value of ethical conduct, professional integrity, and lifelong learning for nursing practitioners (Herrmann, 2020). Because nursing is a respected profession, nurses are required to fulfill ethical standards while continually pursuing professional development.
I participated in talks about ethical issues in healthcare throughout my nursing school and gave thought to my personal and professional ideals. To keep graduates up to date with the most recent developments in nursing practice, nursing programs emphasize a culture of continuous learning.
Essential 9: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice.
This essential stresses the combination of knowledge and abilities needed for baccalaureate-prepared nurses to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care (Burton, Williams, & Anderson, 2019). This requirement guarantees that graduates can manage difficult patient care scenarios and work independently as generalist nurses.
I have been exposed to various clinical settings throughout my nursing program. This has given me expertise with different patient groups and healthcare situations. I improved my ability to prioritize care and successfully handle the requirements of several patients. I also gained essential clinical reasoning abilities.
