What did you expect to learn in this course, and what do you expect to learn in your program that will help you achieve your academic and professional goals?
Purpose:
It is important to develop your professional goals and how you achieve them in this course and your chosen program.
Directions:
After exploring the course description, Course Outcomes, and unit themes and outcomes, complete your SDLP for your professional objectives and create a Skill Market pertinent to an opportunity with an employer found in your Unit 8 Learning Activity.
What did you expect to learn in this course, and what do you expect to learn in your program that will help you achieve your academic and professional goals? You are encouraged to reflect earnestly on how the course content and experience might serve your goals, as well as on what you might proactively do throughout your program to develop in your target areas.
If you have determined there are additional areas from which you would benefit, or areas you would like to replace, this is a good time to do so. Remember, this is your learning plan, so design it to help you achieve your unique goals.
Learning Plan
Identify your anticipated nursing role.
List your professional goals (3–5 years from now).
Identify the knowledge, skills, and accomplishments needed for the advanced nursing role that you have identified above. A minimum of three items each should be listed for Knowledge, Skills, and Accomplishments.
Discuss at least three strengths to leverage. Complete steps 1, 2, and 3 of the template for Strengths to Leverage.
Discuss at least one area to develop. Complete steps 1, 2, and 3 of the template for Areas to Develop.
Write a reflection that discusses what you learned in this course and expect to learn in your program that will help you achieve your academic and professional goals. Provide an evaluation of how your SDLP can provide for lifelong learning. The reflection should be a minimum of 300 words.
You must submit the Unit 10 SDLP assignment using the SDLP Template. You should not submit a written paper for the Unit 10 SDLP assignment. If you have references to support your SDLP, then you should add the heading “References” at the end of the SDLP Template and add the references in APA format. You do not need to have a title page for this assignment.
This assignment will be partially graded based on evidence of thoughtful development of your SDLP.
Skill Market
What is it?
Skill marketing is the art or practice of proactively shopping yourself to employers, tailored specifically to each position you apply for. This allows you to speak directly to the position you are applying for and why you are qualified for the role. This should be limited to no more than two paragraphs and can be used in your cover letter more formally.
What to include:
The position you are applying for and the skills that qualify you, including education, military experience, volunteer work, clinical rotations, civilian work experience, and both hard and soft skills.
When to use:
You are reaching out to contact via LinkedIn®.
You are submitting a resume via email to a company that you are interested in but that may not have listed openings at this time.
You are submitting a resume via email.
As a part of a “thank you” or follow-up letter after an interview.
Anytime you want to illustrate a correlation between what the employer is seeking and what you have to offer.

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING PLAN
The Self-Directed Learning Plan (SDLP) is a process and document to chronicle your accomplishments and learning steps through the graduate program and beyond as they relate to your professional goals.
The SDLP will help you to identify and target the array of competencies you need to reach your professional objectives and to help you organize your graduate learning experience to suit your career objectives.
The SDLP will be a section of your Program Portfolio, so take some quality introspective time to consider strengths and areas of development relevant to your career objectives. Knowing your strengths and areas to develop, you can begin a plan to find out what you need to do to achieve your career goals. We encourage you to continue to reflect on the identified areas throughout the program. If you feel a strength or development area is no longer relevant, you may add another to take its place. At any time, you may also add additional areas.

Strengths to Leverage
Step 1: The most effective and satisfied people align their work with their natural strong points. Identify 3-5 of your key strengths (see Column 1 below); these could be a competency, skill, ability, knowledge area or personal characteristic. Think about how you can leverage those strengths to be effective in your work, achieve your professional goals, and become a leader in your profession.
Step 2: At the beginning of each course in your graduate program, answer the following question either using this template or a narrative format. What do you expect to learn in this course and in your program that will help you leverage your strengths? (See Column 2 below) Be as specific as you can, e.g., assume that a strength is your analytical ability.
Step 3: Answer the following questions either using this template or a narrative format. Did you learn what you expected to learn? (See Column 3 below) Was there information or insights that helped you that you didn’t expect to learn at the outset of the course? What changes or additions, if any, will you make to your SDLP based on learning in this course?
Areas to Develop
Step 1: We all have strengths, but we also have areas on which we need to improve. As related to your career goal, identify 1-2 areas to develop (see Column 1 below); these could be a competency, skill, ability, knowledge area or personal characteristic. Think about how you can improve in these areas so that you can achieve your professional goals and become a leader in your profession.
Step 2: What do you expect to learn in this course and in your program that will help you to develop in the identified area? (See Column 2 below)
Step 3: Answer the following questions either using this template. Did you learn what you expected to learn? (See Column 3 below) Was there information or insights that helped you that you didn’t expect to learn at the outset of the course? What changes or additions, if any, will you make to your SDLP based on learning in this course?
