Visit a museum, either in person or virtually, and explore the collections of art that fit the genres of neoclassicism, romanticism, realism and/or impressionism.

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze a work of art in the context of the museum in which it is located. The history of the work of art, including where and when it is created and the process by which it became a part of the museum collection, should be part of your research. Your thesis should explore the genre the work belongs to and its key characteristics and themes.

Assignment Guidelines

Write a minimum of 2 pages of analysis, addressing all of the following steps. Please use MLA style and be sure to document any sources used.

1. Visit a museum, either in person or virtually, and explore the collections of art that fit the genres of neoclassicism, romanticism, realism and/or impressionism.

2. Choose a work within one of these collections that appeals to you. Take the time to observe how it fits into the larger collection (whether it be an actual museum space or a virtual one).

3. Explain how it exemplifies the key characteristics of that movement.

4. Discuss its purpose, its history, and its impact on art history and/or the world around it at the time it was made and if relevant, now.

5. Find out how it ended up in the museum – what is known about its history? What are its origins? Was it donated or did the museum purchase it?

6. Write an analysis that incorporate the above elements
