How do you prepare for the big exams?
ASSIGNMENT:
STEP 1: Pick one of the following suggested topics, or chose your own topic, as long as it is newsworthy and approved by the professor.
Midterms/Finals – How do you prepare for the big exams?
Pressures of being a college student – How do you cope with going to school and maintaining work and a life outside of school?
Politics – Can students make a difference? Can their voices be heard?
Textbooks – Are they too expensive? Is it better to rent or buy?
Covid19 – How has it changed your life? What are you doing to survive being cooped up at home?
STEP 2: Interview students – or if class is online – you can interview ANYONE – in person or by phone.
You will need to come up with three solid, usable quotes, all from different people.
You may need to interview six or more people to get strong quotes.
You can record their answers or write them down, word for word.
INTERVIEW TIPS: Call or walk up to students, introduce yourself and explain that you would like to talk to them:
“Hi, my name is Tracie, I am a student and a campus news-reporter. I am working on a story about (Fill in the blank) for my journalism class. Can I ask you a quick question?”
If they say NO: Move on. Don’t waste your time trying to convince them to talk. If they say YES, and you want to record the interview, ask them:
“Is it ok if I record this interview? I want to make sure I accurately write your quote.”
Then, begin the interview, but before you ask any questions, ask the following first:
“OK, I am recording now. That’s OK, right? Can I first get your name, and could you spell it for me? Are you a student, and if so, what are you studying?”
Then, ask your questions.
STEP 3: Write a brief story. Include all three quotes.
REMEMBER: A quote needs to be set up properly. There must be a transition line (paragraph) containing solid facts/information before the quote. The quote must then be in its own paragraph.
EXAMPLE:
(Transition) Ann Smith lives in Chatsworth and takes the bus to Pierce College. She said waiting at the bus stop in the rain is not fun.
(Quote) “I end up getting drenched. It is hard to keep my backpack and books dry,” Smith said.
Your completed story should be structured like this:
Paragraph 1 – Lede (One sentence)
Paragraph 2 – Transition to quote #1 – Sets up the quote.
Paragraph 3 – Quote #1 (One or two sentences)
Paragraph 4 – Transition to quote #2 – Sets up the quote.
Paragraph 5 – Quote #2 (One or two sentences)
Paragraph 6 – Transition to quote #3 – Sets up the quote.
Paragraph 7 – Quote #3 (One or two sentences)
Paragraph 8 – Ending to your story – a line or two that brings your story to a conclusion.
Example:
Paragraph 1 –
Pierce College’s president wants to build a parking structure on campus to deal with the lack of parking at the college.
Paragraph 2 –
English major Kim Louis has been attending Pierce College for two years. She said a parking structure would be a great addition to the campus. She said often has to park far from her classes.
Paragraph 3 –
“There is never enough parking on campus,” Louis said. “I end up parking on the street most of the time.”
Paragraph 4 –
Ana Ortega is a math major. She said she rides the bus because she hates searching for a parking spot.
Paragraph 5 –
“I am so tired of driving around and around, and having to wait for someone to leave,” Ortega said. “The bus is more convenient.”
Paragraph 6 –
Professor Steven Ball doesn’t think a parking structure is a good idea. He said it would just put more students in cars.
Paragraph 7 –
“I think students should take a bus or ride a bike,” Ball said. “There are too many cars on the road already.”
Paragraph 8 –
Pierce president Larry Buckley said there isn’t enough money in this year’s budget to build a parking lot, but he will try to find the money next year.
Requirements: 8 paragraphs
