Explain why you selected occupational therapy as a career and how this degree relates to your immediate and long-term professional goals. We invite you to share G how your lived experiences (e.g., personal, professional, or cultural, etc.) have influenced your interest in pursuing OT.
This essay is an important part of your application and allows you to clearly and effectively express yourself.
Here is an example of what I have thus far, but it is only being provided for idea purposes only:
Tony Robbins once said, “Passion is the driving force that turns possibilities into realities.” Passion? This is to tell you occupational therapy is my passion and how I just love it so much. No, instead I’ll bring you down memory lane, a few road blocks, and of course, the fun stuff, what brings us here in totality. “So you say, occupational therapy, right? Was that how you say it? So close to a physical therapist? Or do you do that stuff with people’s backs?” No matter how many times I tell people about the work of art that OT’s do, it doesn’t quite resonate until I’ve painted a picture.Let’s try this, close your eyes. Just imagine, an older shiny bald headed man with a fair physique, that enjoyed grilling the best jerk chicken, completing yard work before anyone would notice, or even driving in a Ford pickup truck tuned into the latest reggae hits. Now, all of these are considered to be part of his daily tasks and routines, which we’d call his occupations. Say, one day he has experienced a life threatening stroke, but has managed to regain strength, but now is having difficulty to perform the occupations he loves and cherishes. The appropriate and effective treatment process would consist that the OT would observe, analyze, and construct a plan for this man. The plan would be developed and individualized to address his challenges and needs– ensuring a quality of life. In short, we work to reacquire the things we once loved or even new goals that have yet to be discovered.
Being asked a million times of what do you want to be when you grow up, had to have been the most annoying question to ask a kid. Until you’re sitting in your third attempt of anatomy and physiology, you finally agree that that question was essential after all. I know we never usually can tell where we’ll be in 5 to 10 years, but I know I see myself having OTD attached to my name. Five years ago, I sure didn’t. I was absolutely hopeless. A young girl, devastated from the traumatic loss of her father the year before, I had not intentions in continuing my life. I just knew it stopped there. That young girl didn’t know, but she was just beginning her transition into reality. That same reality that Tony Robbins said that I’d need passion to keep me motivated enough to determine my future. My reality was that I had to figure out what truly made me happy. What made me feel a sense of purpose and gratitude? Based on what I vowed to my late father and grandmother, my main goals were to become someone in life. In a traditional Jamaican household, it’s common to hear that you must have ambition to keep yourself striving, but you must also work exceptionally well towards it. This core value has influenced my dedication to work and education, which has been exemplified through my unwavering commitment to the field of occupational therapy.

Title: The Resilient Journey: From Registered Behavioral Therapist to Awesome Occupational Therapist
Introduction:
Life’s challenges and adversities can mold individuals into remarkable beings. This essay delves into the inspiring journey of a registered behavioral therapist with Jamaican immigrant parents, who endured immense hardships but emerged as an exceptional occupational therapist. Despite facing numerous obstacles, their unwavering determination, caregiving abilities, and work ethic have shaped them into an awe-inspiring professional.
Section 1: Overcoming Personal Loss and Adversities
During their junior year of high school, the registered behavioral therapist tragically lost their father, which shattered their world. The subsequent upheaval continued when their stepmother, facing her own struggles, forced them out of their home after the major loss of her father, leaving them homeless. Amidst this turmoil, their mother’s health deteriorated due to a clogged artery, necessitating constant care. Through these trials during her senior year of high school, the therapist’s resilience was forged, and they emerged as a persevering student majoring in pre-occupational therapy.
Section 2: From Home Health Aide to Caregiver
The experiences gained as a home health aide not only provided them with invaluable skills but also ignited a deep sense of empathy and understanding for individuals requiring support. Becoming their mother’s caregiver further solidified their commitment to providing compassionate care and inspired them to pursue a career in occupational therapy.
Section 3: Balancing Challenges with Academic Pursuits
While facing immense personal struggles, the therapist’s determination to pursue education never wavered. They worked tirelessly, managing full-time work throughout their college years, determined to fund their education independently. Spending restless nights of studying then delivery driving, caregiving, and keeping a steady full time position kept her from the parties and club scenes. This dedication exemplifies their work ethic and determination to achieve their dreams despite overwhelming odds.
Section 4: From Registered Behavioral Therapist to Occupational Therapist
Building upon their experience as a registered behavioral therapist, the transition to occupational therapy may seem natural. The therapist’s proficiency in understanding behavior and communication will become instrumental in their role as an occupational therapist, allowing them to create personalized interventions and address the unique needs of their clients.
Section 5: Compassion and Cultural Understanding
Growing up in a household with Jamaican immigrant parents exposed them to diverse cultural perspectives, fostering cultural sensitivity and understanding. This empathy is reflected in their practice, where they prioritize culturally appropriate interventions and tailor treatments to their clients’ backgrounds and experiences.
Conclusion:
The remarkable journey of this registered behavioral therapist turned occupational therapist exemplifies the power of resilience, compassion, and determination. Despite facing personal loss, homelessness, and financial struggles, their unwavering commitment to education and caregiving transformed them into an exceptional professional. Their story serves as a testament to the power of turning adversity into strength, and their future as an occupational therapist promises to be awe-inspiring. They stand as a living example of how challenges can be overcome with perseverance, dedication, and an unyielding spirit.
Honorable mention: I witnessed my father have a stroke while driving. The experience ignited a fire that I must keep striving for greatness. My father taught me to never do things just for the love of money, but to love what you do. I’ve also witnessed my grandmother fall a few times. She showed me true determination by migrating from Jamaica to the states to contrive better opportunities to make it possible for me to even become an OT. She experienced racial discrimination and even suffered from vitiligo which encouraged me to become an advocate for diversity and inclusion.
