ENGL 202 Assignment Sheet Unit 1: Examining Literacy
This paper, like all the major papers in this course, should draw on the readings, class discussions and
shorter writings from this unit. I am looking for evidence that you have been able to synthesize and
think critically about the concepts and ideas contained in this unit. Remember to keep a clear sense of
your genre and purpose in mind when thinking about this assignment.
The Task:
For this paper, you will write a narrative reflection on a particular form of literacy from your life. Your
paper should have three major parts: 1) a discussion of the specific “meaning making” activities that the
successful practice of your literacy requires; 2) a discussion of 1-3 sponsors of this literacy and/or a
discussion of 1-3 significant literacy events. This discussion should specifically address moments of
literacy acquisition and practice over time; 3) a critical reflection on how this literacy has shaped you
(identity/values).
Guiding Questions:
These are questions to get you thinking. You do not have to answer these specifically in your paper
although a good paper will most likely touch on some of these.
Who are/were my literacy sponsors?
What kinds of activities do/did my sponsor(s) value?
What kinds of literate activities do I value and where do those value come from?
What kinds of literate activities have I been steered towards and by who?
What has motivated my literacy sponsor(s) to steer me towards these kinds of literate activities?
What might be the cost(s) of valuing these kinds of literacy over others?
Why have I been accepting or resistant to the kinds of literacy my sponsor(s) have valued?
How is my literacy history similar to or different than some of the literacies we’ve encountered?
Audience:
Our reader always influences how we write. Therefore, it is important to know who our reader is. For
assignments your instructor is part of your audience. However, in addition to this audience, for this
paper, you should consider you are writing to a fellow college student who is interested in literacy and
your literacy history. Your reader is college educated but doesn’t know much about you, literacy studies
or Deborah Brandt.
