HDLs are critical in many fields where digital systems are designed and manufactured. This could range from small embedded systems (like a smart thermostat) to complex systems such as network routers or even the CPUs in our computers.
For example, consider the development of a new processor by a company like Intel or AMD. The design of such a complex piece of hardware, containing billions of transistors, would be nearly impossible without a tool like an HDL to allow the designers to work at a high level of abstraction, and then gradually refine the design down to the gate level for fabrication.
