OBJECTIVES:

3. Provide resources that older adults who may be struggling with needs; such as finances, meals, housing, home repairs, etc.
4. Provide resources for caregivers of older adults who may need respite care, help with end-of-life care, understanding diseases and disorders of aging, etc.

7. Discussing variations in household structure, patterns of home ownership, and alternative living arrangements among the aged to include family and institutional care options.
11. Evaluating strategies for assessing older persons’ needs for care, ensuring their safety and seeking elder care options.
12. Understanding the importance of the individual, family, neighborhood, community, and societal contributions to optimal aging.
16. Developing a source of information for use by professional caregivers, families of the aging, and the public who are addressing issues of aging.
20. Differentiating between functional mental health disorders and organic mental health disorders, analyzing the need for improved mental health services for the elderly, and identifying good mental health safeguards.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Read about techniques/strategies that will aid older adults in maintaining health, independence, and social relationships. Also, you will research websites that will lead you to resources for caregivers of older adults and for older adults. These will be part of your readings in Weeks 2, 4, & 6 and through your own research. The readings may lead you to other resources and websites.
2. Attend Zoom Chat in Week 2 where we will discuss this assignment. We will discuss it again in the Zoom Chat in Week 4.
3. You will provide 8 techniques/strategies for each of the first two objectives (1&2) above and 8 resources for the second two objectives (3&4) above.
4. Have a Title page followed by an introduction to your booklet on a separate page: Who is it for, how will it benefit them, how reliable is it, etc. Make it interesting so that the person reading it will want to look at the rest of your booklet.
5. Section 1 is for Objective 1. This is where you are going to put your strategies for older adults to maintain and improve their physical and mental health. Think about what physical and mental health might include – strength, endurance, safety, fall prevention, memory exercises, concentration, fine motor skills, keeping a routine, having hobbies, affirming oneself, positivity, etc. You will outline 8 different strategies that an older adult can follow to maintain or improve their physical and/or mental health and tell which each one targets.
6. Section 2 is for Objective 2: This is where you are going to put your strategies for older adults to maintain and/or improve their independence and social relationships. Think about what that would look like – having a home, having hot meals, being able to obtain health care and needed medications, being able to take care of daily living skills, getting together with friends, going to a senior community center, doing volunteer activities, being involved with other family members, staying involved with hobbies, etc. You will outline 8 different strategies that older adults can follow and/or improve their independence and social relationships.
7. Section 3 is for Objective 3: this is where you will list 8 resources for older adults who are struggling with needs that may pertain to finances, home, repairs, meals, etc. Each resource will list the name of the resource, the service provided, the address, phone number, website, and any requirements of the individual seeking help. The resources should be located in the area you live in or where an older relative lives who might benefit from your booklet. For examples of some programs, you might want to look up Habitat for Humanity, Foster Grandparent Program, Meals on Wheels, and 211.org for the state you live in.
8. Section 4 is for Objective 4: this is where you will list 8 resources for caregivers of older adults who may need respite care, help with end-of-life care, understanding diseases and disorders of aging, etc. Each resource will list the name of the resource, the service provided, the address, phone number, website, and any requirements of the individual seeking help. The resources should be located in the area you live in or where an older relative lives who might benefit from your booklet. You could list actual Hospices; places like Alzheimer’s Foundation, The American Parkinson’s Disease Association, Rehabilitation places, Assisted living, Memory care, etc. You might even give a brief description of diseases of older adults like Lewy Body Dementia or Lou Gehrig’s.

11. On a separate page, write a paragraph about how you felt and what you thought about this assignment prior to starting, during, and once you were finished. This is about your personal thoughts and feelings. Not a conclusion and does not include research. This is usually written in 1st person. Feel free to add any recommendations to the professor about this assignment at the end of this paragraph.
