A successful effort in global health should include the deployment of effective strategies and partnerships. Charitable organizations have a long history of caring for people in need; healthcare started as compassionate care by religious organizations. Partnership with charitable organizations would be a sound strategy. If our healthcare system is to be successful, we must look beyond our communities, mobilize our resources, and deploy strategies that may yield better healthcare outcomes. Our healthcare workforce is composed of a complimentary mix of professionals from different cultures and backgrounds. Therefore, we must think, act, and do things in collaboration with others. In other words, cultural competence should be an integral part of our healthcare strategies.
Cultural competence is defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations” (United Language Group, 2021).
Leaders must be willing to thoroughly examine their internal and external environments so that they can plan effectively. Such planning normally involves examining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of their organizations. Effective leaders plan well and mobilize resources to enable their employees to do their jobs.
There are six main stages of the strategic planning cycle, as follows (Huettich, 2020):
Identifying your strategic position
Gathering people and information
Performing a SWOT analysis
Formulating a strategic plan
Executing a strategic plan
Constantly monitoring performance
Welcome to Unit 5! In this unit, we will cover strategic planning practices. In this unit, you will have the opportunity to learn how to do the following:
Create a comprehensive lead management plan that fosters collaboration and quality care and addresses deficiencies in a healthcare organization
Categorize internal and external environmental forces that foster teamwork, effective decision making, and improved collaborative strategies to enhance organizational performance in a healthcare organization
Examine macro trends within the health sector and the implications for leadership development and collaboration to deliver quality care nationally
As potential administrators, you must know that communication among stakeholders is very important for organizational success. Communication among providers, patients, and other stakeholders is guided by regulatory mandates, and organizations must be in compliance with such mandates. For example, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandates the privacy and security of patient information, and dissemination of such information must be in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies. In addition, leadership must effectively communicate organizational policies to all employees to ensure a common understanding.
