Group therapy is not for everyone, but it could be beneficial to individuals who would do well in a group setting. Case managers should use their judgment to determine who would benefit from group therapy. During the intake process between the case manager and client, the case manager can use the information gathered to see if the client would benefit from a group setting, what group setting would work best for them, etc. Group leaders should be culturally sensitive along with having the proper training and supervision before leading a group session. During the supervision, the future group leader will be able to overcome any challenges they may have, internally or externally, as well as countertransference (Wodarski, J., & Feit, M. (2012). Along with having a well trained group leader, group dynamics play a role in the group setting. It would not be wise to place an individual who has never struggled with alcohol and substance abuse in a group designed for individuals’ recovery from substances. A person who does not like to be around people due to social anxiety would not benefit from group therapy. There are many types of group therapy including evidence-based group work, psychotherapy groups, self-help groups, process groups, and task groups. Evidence-based groups rely on research and practice (Macgowan, M. J. (2006). Through this research the group leaders assess, evaluate, monitor, and improve the group (Macgowan, M. J. (2006). Psychotherapy groups help the group process their challenges and find coping mechanisms to overcome them (Group Therapy: Types, How It Works, & What to Expect, n.d.). These types of groups can take place in clinics and in-patient or out-patient facilities. Self-help groups tend to be ran by a member of the group who has maintained the challenges in their life. For example, AA or NA groups are typically ran by an individual who struggled with substance abuse and has maintained their recovery.
