Activity 2 How do gender and sexuality intersect in development?
Learning Objective: This activity will ask you to examine how gender and sexuality intersect in development. Our gender is related to the sexuality labels that society uses (e.g., homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual), but the current viewpoint is to view gender and sexuality as fluid and determined by the individual. Fluidity in gender and sexuality means that through our lifetime, we are not always at the same point on the continuum. Sometimes an individual will feel really male, sometimes a little less male or maybe even female. Maybe someone will identify as a heterosexual female, but date a female. These are not easy questions to answer for those who have an intersex condition. Some of you may not think that these labels are even necessary. Yet, I think these issues beg a larger question. How do we make sense out of the intersection of our biological makeup and influences from the environment? For children, one important area of concern is puberty. It marks such a milestone in both gender and sexuality in development. This activity will ask you to reflect on your own development and to investigate information regarding an intersex variation.
1. Given your gender identity, how did you learn about puberty? What sources of information did you have about puberty and gender? Briefly describe how puberty was explained to you, how old you were at the time, as well as the context (e.g., puberty was explained to me at school by health teachers; they explained biological functions, social or relationship implications in 5th grade, etc.)? 2. Go to the Intersex Society of North America website (found within the Weblinks of the Biological Influences folder, or www.isna.org) Click on FAQ. Click on Intersex Conditions. Read about at least 3 intersex variations (e.g., CAIS, CAH). Pick one of the variations to focus on for the remainder of this activity. How does an individual with this particular intersex variation identify in terms of gender? How do you imagine their pubertal development occurred? What do you think they needed to know about puberty? Do some research if you need to. Cite your sources. 3. Pick a gender development theory and describe its main points. Then discuss its ability to explain gender regarding the intersex variation that you chose. What does this theory NOT explain in terms of development regarding this intersex condition? 4. Provide a conclusion addressing the difference between the male/female binary and the intersex variation you chose according to gender and sexuality. Underline and bold class concepts that you use to describe your experience. This helps me determine that you understand the concepts.
Grading Use concepts and terminology that are used in the course. Those students who use these often and correctly will create assignments that are “Superior” (7 or more concepts used). Six concepts used accurately earns an “Effective.” Five earns an “Adequate.” Submissions with less than five terms or no terminology usage earns “Below Average.” This activity is to be completed as an individual. Underline and bold concepts that you use. Submission Instructions After creating your assignment in word processing software (e.g., Microsoft word), copy and paste the assignment into the Write Submission box in the Assignment. Do not fill in the assignment in the comments box or you will earn a “0” for the assignment. Click on Submit – be sure your assignment has been submitted or I have not received it. You may submit more than once.
