Progressives often believed in the idea of using the state to uplift poor or otherwise marginalized groups. How does this idea relate to the imperialist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries? Was the push for imperial expansion altruistic, or did it represent more of a violent (some would say racist) drive for power? Be sure to evaluate both sides of the issue in your answer, and reflect on whether it is fair to equate progressives with imperialists.
