Scenario: Opioid and Substance Abuse in Latin America
Carla is a 26-year-old woman from Medellin, Colombia. She works as a server in a local restaurant. Her employer found her unresponsive in the restaurant's staff room and took her to the local hospital. After she was revived with the opioid antagonist naloxone (called la naloxona in Colombia), Carla was found to have nearly overdosed on opioids. Carla admitted to hospital staff that this was part of a pattern of episodic drug use she had engaged in over the past decade of her life.

Overview
In your professional nursing practice, you often have conversations with peers that require factual backing or times when you want to research specific information. Because of this, it is useful to practice effectively communicating on industry-relevant topics and sharing your sources.
Discussions provide you an opportunity for scholarly inquiry, reflective practice, and learning through others’ perspectives. They are also an opportunity for social connection with meaningful interactions. You will be able to build a community of practice that follows appropriate etiquette with all posts while increasing your knowledge. Discussion posts should be substantive in nature, demonstrating depth and critical thinking.
In each of Modules Three through Six, you will be provided with a scenario. Read the scenario, then respond to the prompts. You will be assigned into smaller groups to have richer, more in-depth conversations on these case studies. You should engage as if this were a face-to-face small discussion. Collaboration and coordination of healthcare across disciplines are imperative to provide comprehensive care to individuals and populations. As a participant in an interdisciplinary course, you have the advantage of discussing with your peers in other disciplines their perspectives about and priorities related to each topic.
Guidelines for Submission
For each discussion, you must create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts.
For your initial post, do the following:
- Write a post of 1 to 2 paragraphs. (Note that the prompt will often deal with complex topics that could lead to lengthy responses. However, your task is to distill your ideas to a brief, meaningful response.)
- In Modules Three through Six, complete your initial post by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. of your local time zone.
- Your post must include at least one citation from a credible, current source (within the last five years). Use proper citation methods for your discipline when referencing scholarly or popular sources.
For your response posts, do the following:
- Reply to at least two classmates outside of your own initial post thread.
- In Modules Three through Six, complete your two response posts by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. of your local time zone.
- Demonstrate more depth and thought than saying things like “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in the discussion prompt.
- You must include at least one citation per response post from a credible, current source (within the last five years). Use proper citation methods for your discipline when referencing scholarly or popular sources.
