Climate Change Report
Project Objective: To better understand global biomes, and the potential effect of climate change on ecosystems and societies in these biomes. This helps to meet the course objectives of “recognizing levels of biological organization” and “using critical thinking skills to relate adaptations to survival and reproduction.” It also satisfies the global objective for this course.
Procedure:
1. Choose a city from the following list OR another foreign city that interests you. If you choose a different city, you must get approval for that city as a focus of your project before beginning your in-depth study. (You may have to do some initial research to ensure there is sufficient information on this city to proceed.)
· London, UK
· Paris, France
· Rome, Italy
· Vancouver, Canada
· Sydney, Australia
· Moskva (Moscow), Russia
· Tokyo, Japan
· Beijing, China
· Cairo, Egypt
· Bangkok, Thailand
· Lima, Peru
2. Research this city, to discover the following basic information:
· Geographical location and size
· Demographics of citizens (population, population density, age distribution, immigration, emigration, etc.)
· Biome in which it is located. Refer to your text (Climate Change module) and links provided below. Include a climatograph.
· Climate history, as updated as possible (at least through 1990). This should include, at minimum, average maximum and minimum temperatures, average precipitation, monthly and annually)
· Explain the greenhouse effect and global warming. Discuss past and potential future effects of climate change on:
· Ecosystems: Discuss both plants and animals, with some emphasis on possible extinctions and adaptations that have prevented (or may in the future prevent) extinction
· Society (economy, agriculture, jobs, etc.)
· Human health: Discuss specific organ systems and diseases
· Provide a specific example of the role of the carbon cycle in an ecosystem representative of your city. (For example, how carbon passes through certain organisms in your area.) Discuss the relationship of photosynthesis and respiration. Elaborate on the process of photosynthesis.
This discussion should be as specific as possible…HOW is climate change going to bring about the effects you present?
