- In each response, identify one change in the office design or the social worker’s body language that would create a more nurturing environment.
- Explain why this change creates a more comfortable space for the client.
1.Identify one to two points you would change in each of the following aspects of the video scenario:
· Seating arrangements of the social worker and client
The thing I would change regarding the seating arrangements would be taking the table away and sitting directly across from the client. Possibly getting some furniture in the room facing each other. The client would have their own couch, and so would the social worker.
Room design and décor
The room would be changed by simply adding 2 couches inside of it, for the social worker and their client(s). I would then add coffee, water bottles, and snacks for the client in case they come to their appointments, and they are hungry. I would also add a small waterfall system I the room, so it could give off that calming effect to the clients.
When it comes to decorating, I would add wall décor that says positive messages, or quotes. If the clients see the positive messages on the wall this may make them feel like they can overcome all obstacles. Lastly, I would buy boxes of Kleenex, because most of the clients tend to get emotional, which causes them to cry.
Body positions of the social worker and client
I would have all my clients on the couch sitting back calmly and comfortably. Mrs. Bargas looked very tense and anxious in the video. She was nervous and was always moving her hands as she was talking to the Social worker.
Explain why you would make these changes and how these changes might improve the interviewing process.
I would make these changes that I have provided for the social worker and the client(s), because I feel this would help the clients relax more. You must make the clients feel like they are at home, so if we made those small changes, the clients would adapt more; which would make them open more about their issues. I believe after the changes we have made, and consistency, the client and the social worker can get a lot accomplished.
Describe the overall energy in the room and how the office design and social worker’s body language help to create this type of energy.
· The energy seemed off. They were far apart from the table, which it would be extremely difficult for the social worker to give her client Mrs. Bargas a hug. The Social worker should have tried a little harder to care about Mrs. Bargas feelings. The social worker should have offered her some water or snacks before the interview got started. The office design was very bland and boring, so this is probably why Mrs. Bargas was daydreaming for a few seconds.

2. After watching the video Southside Community Services: Mrs. Bargas, Episode 2, there are some changes that could be made to improve the body language and overall energy in the room.
Seating Arrangements In the video, the social worker and client are seated across from each other at a table. This seating arrangement may create a power dynamic, with the social worker being in a position of authority. To improve this, the social worker could move to a side-by-side seating arrangement, such as sitting next to the client on a couch or chair. This would help to reduce the power dynamic and allow for a more comfortable and open conversation.
Room Design and Décor The interview room in the video is sparsely decorated, with plain walls and no decorations. Adding some décor, such as artwork or plants, could help to create a more welcoming environment for the client. Additionally, dimming the overhead lighting and using lamps or candles can help create a more relaxing atmosphere.
Body Positions Both the social worker and client are sitting up straight and facing each other. This posture can be perceived as confrontational or uncomfortable. The social worker could adopt a more relaxed and open posture, such as leaning back or crossing their legs, which may help the client feel more comfortable and at ease.
Overall Energy The office design and the social worker's body language can contribute to the overall energy in the room. By making the changes suggested above, the room could become a more welcoming and comfortable space for the client. The social worker's body language can also impact the energy in the room. By adopting a more relaxed and open posture, the social worker can create a more calming and comfortable environment for the client.
In conclusion, small changes to the seating arrangements, room design and decor, and body positions can significantly improve the interviewing process. By creating a welcoming and comfortable environment, the client is more likely to feel comfortable and receptive to assistance. Social workers must be mindful of their body language and the environment in which they work, as they play a crucial role in creating a successful helping relationship.
Overall, the energy in the room is calm and professional, with the social worker displaying active listening skills and empathy toward the client. The office design and social worker's body language help to create this type of energy by conveying a sense of openness and attentiveness. These changes align with the National Association of Social Workers' (2017) Code of Ethics, which states that social workers should create an environment that is respectful, welcoming, and empowering to clients. By making small changes to the seating arrangements, room design and décor, and body positions, social workers can improve the overall energy and create a more positive environment for their clients. These changes can lead to more productive and effective client relationships.
