Working with your mentor teacher, identify a math lesson or time during which interventions from the Clinical Field Experience C intervention plan can be implemented to benefit the previously identified students.
After implementing the intervention strategies, seek feedback from your mentor teacher about how it went. Continue discussion regarding the strengths and potential improvements of the students.
After the math lesson or activity, summarize and reflect upon your experiences in 250-500 words, being sure to:
- Briefly describe the students identified needs and explain how interventions were selected. Rationalize choices in relation to the needs of the students.
- Describe how the students performed on the math activities and reflect upon your experience implementing the intervention strategies. Include possible changes you would make in the future when implementing these strategies.
- Describe how students could utilize one of the intervention strategies at home.
- Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.

During my field experience, I was lucky to observe my mentor engage a group of students in a differentiated classroom. The group of students had different needs that made them face various challenges which were adversely affecting their concentration in class. In the math lesson, the group of students was able to show various difficulties and I was able to propose various strategies to help this group of students. This clinical field experience is an intervention plan created together with my mentor for the group of students that were identified as having various challenges.
Identification of applicable tiered intervention (1, 2, or 3)
The applicable tiered intervention is tiered 2. This is because the methods that have been proposed to help in meeting the needs of the students are proven to work. The students will get the necessary help in tier 2 where they are already working in small groups. The students will take part in regular lessons with the other children in class and will still receive tier 1 support. There skill level will be checked every two weeks as the special educator will see if the interventions are working.
Grade level of instruction
The students are in grade five taking part in math lessons where the challenges were identified. There were various challenges observed during the previous field experience in the differentiated classroom. The challenges observed in grade five classroom included; organizational problems, task comprehension, and language difficulties. These challenges were adversely affecting the concentration of the students during the lesson. They were also impacting on their performance on the subject.
An activity implementing 1-2 intervention strategies
There were two strategies that had been proposed to help in meeting the needs of the students. Thee strategies would ensure the challenges facing the students were mitigated. The first strategy was the introduction of math centers in the classroom. Math centers are small skill areas where the learners would be able to complete different tasks on the small skill area of the differentiated classroom and as part of a small group. They would work on a small math activity for a given amount of time before moving to a different math station. The teacher would be in one of the math stations helping the students in math problems like divisions or measurement. The stations will involve the students being involved in practice will help in enhancing their math skills. The concentration will also ensure the students avoid some of the challenges they were facing. The movement from one math station to the nest is an effective activity that will ensure they are able to improve on math and also eradicate the challenges they were facing.
The other activity would involve the use of idea organizers. Idea organizers involves showing the students how to use different instruments like outlines, graphic organizers, and others. The activity shows the students how to take notes using two columns where the left column will be for main ideas and questions while the right column will be for details. It is an effective activity that ensures the students are able to comprehend multiple tasks while staying organized. It helps in managing challenges like organization and multiple tasks comprehension.
Brief description of each intervention strategy and how it supports the identified student challenges
The introduction of math centers ensures the students work in small groups where they move from one center to the other resolving math problems. The teacher would be involved in one or more of the centers where she will be able to help the students with math problems. The students would remain at one of the centers for a specific amount of time before moving to the next one. This activity is effective in improving math proficiency of the learners. It also helps in with the challenges facing the student. The student with language difficulties would be able to interact effectively with the other group of students learning from the others in the centers and also being able to interact with the teacher in one or more of the centers. This would help the student understand what was being taught in class. The activity would also be effective in task comprehension. The learner with the challenge would benefit from working with a group of students and staying at a math center for a specific amount of time receiving all the help they can get about the tasks. They would also work with the teachers to help in improving areas they face the most challenges.
The use of idea organizers involved the students using different instruments like outlines, graphic organizers, and others. They would take notes using two columns where the left column will be for main ideas and questions while the right column will be for details. This would ensure they are able to comprehend multiple tasks and stay organized. It is an effective strategy for helping the student with organizational problems and comprehending multiple tasks.
Materials needed and procedures for each intervention strategy
The materials needed for math centers include dices, colored tiles, unfix cubes, place value blocks, spinners, counting chips, triangle flashcards, charts and number lines. These materials will be placed in different math centers to be used in different math activities. An example is in one of the centers the colored tiles will be used for math games like multiplication, addition, area and perimeter. At another math center unifix cubes will be used for math activities like place value.
The materials needed for the strategies include graphic organizers, sticky notes, and pen and paper. The pen and paper would be used in taking notes using two columns where the left column will be for main ideas and questions while the right column will be for details. Sticky notes would be used for writing ideas when they have them and sticking them on the desks.
Reflection
The special education teacher plans to implement the intervention in to phases where the introduction of math centers would be introduced first. The introduction of math centers is seen as an effective strategy that would be able to meet the various needs of the students including the challenges they were facing. It would help in improving the math problems the whole class was facing. The strategy is seen as one that would help in improving math proficiency in the classroom. Therefore, the role out of the strategy is considered as an important aspect for meeting the needs of the students. My mentor has already started acquiring the materials needed for the math center and would be able to change the differentiated classroom during math lessons. The other strategy would also be implemented in time to help the students with organizational challenges. The idea organizers is a simple strategy which my mentor feels that can be introduced at any time. The students will be taught on using graphic organizers and sticky notes in classroom. After the introduction of the two strategies, my mentor feels that the challenge facing the students will be mitigated.
The field experience offered additional experience that would be beneficial in my future professional career. It was also an exciting experience that allowed me to take part in creating an intervention plan that would help in meeting the various challenges facing students. The intervention plan would be effective in meeting the different challenges facing the students. Will be able to apply the knowledge and experience gained in my future career as a special educator.
