Using the tiered instructional approach of response to intervention (RTI), teachers employ a cycle of instruction and assessments to identify appropriate interventions or determine if the instruction needs to be modified to address student needs. It is important for teachers to understand when and how to implement each tier of intervention:
Tier 1: General instruction for all students and is designed to provide access to grade-level curriculum
Tier 2: Additional programs and strategies provided to students who require additional support in small groups.
Tier 3: Address the needs of the individual student who is experiencing significant problems and/or is unresponsive to Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions.
Arrange to meet with your mentor teacher to observe and interview them regarding their intervention process.
Prior to the field experience, review the requirements of all practicum assignments for this course. Create a document to share with your mentor teacher detailing the requirements for all field experiences for this course and what is being requested of your mentor. This document should include the scheduling required to complete all assignments.
Allocate at least 2 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Observe, interview, and collaborate with your mentor, focusing on literacy assessment practices in Tier 1.
Your interview should address the following:
What type of curriculum-based measurements (CBM) do you use and how do they influence your instruction?
What diagnostic assessments do you use to know the specific reading skills or strategies needing to be taught?
What curriculum-based assessments (CBA) do you use to determine how students are responding to your instruction?
What do you use to indicate if you need to change your instructional objective?
How do you check the fidelity of your instructional strategies?
How do you promote the transfer and maintenance of skills learned during instruction?
What data collection methods are used to track and monitor student progress?
What technology tools are used to focus on continuous and effective data collection and analysis?
How is goal setting communicated and established with the students?
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Collaborate with your mentor to identify any students who need a Tier 2 intervention and will benefit from additional assistance with literacy development (reading and/or writing). You will interact with this student to complete assignments throughout this course.
In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect upon your observations, interview, and collaboration, and explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.
