FSCN 3612 Spring 2023 Literature Review (80 points) Purpose You will complete a review of literature related to a specific population we are studying in class this semester. The purpose of this exercise is to help you develop your research and citation skills, as well as to allow you to learn more about a stage of the lifecycle that most interests you. Instructions You will be writing about a specific population and a condition that affects the population. This could be a health condition or a socioeconomic condition like food insecurity or health literacy. When choosing your population, you should consider factors such as: gender, age, geographic location and climate, race/ethnicity, education, socioeconomic status, nutritional needs, time and skill for food planning and preparation, and/or any other characteristics that might affect food habits and choices. You will examine what foods your population eats and why. Here are some questions to ask when choosing a topic: 1) Which stage of the lifecycle are you most interested in? 2) What is a condition that affects that stage of the lifecycle? 3) How does nutrition status affect the condition? Or how does the condition affect nutrition status? A literature review is different from a basic research paper or an annotated bibliography. Rather than simply summarizing the papers you have read, you will offer an analysis of the information and discuss how multiple papers are related. You will identify gaps in the research and offer ideas for future studies. You will form a thesis (argument) about your population of interest and use your research to support it. Research FSCN librarian Megan Kocher will be available for questions about your research. Aimee and the TAs are also happy to help. We will practice citations, references, and using a citation manager in class. Citations for this paper should be in AMA (American Medical Association) style. Tip: A good place to start finding journal articles is in your textbook Nutrition Through the Lifecycle. As you read the chapters that pertain to your population, pay attention to the subscripts following sentences. These are citations for references included in the back of the book. You may want to locate these research papers and include them in your literature review.
FSCN 3612 Spring 2023 Format The Literature Review must be a maximum of 1200 words, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, and have 1-inch margins. You should cite at least five (5) peer-reviewed journal articles and include a title page and a reference page. References should be in AMA style. Please include your word count on the title page. Peer Review On Monday, March 20, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on Literature Reviews from two of your peers. The objectives of this exercise are to practice giving constructive feedback and to recognize common issues with research papers. This will be done in class. Your participation in the Peer Review activity is worth 10 points of your final Literature Review grade. After Peer Reviews, you will have the opportunity to revise your Literature Review and incorporate feedback. You will also complete a Revision Memo that summarizes the changes made to your Literature Review. A final copy of your Literature Review and Revision Memo will be due on Monday, March 27. Plagiarism Activity You must also complete a plagiarism activity that is worth 10 points of your overall grade on the Literature Review.
