using the section about the Critic and Reviewer in Module 2 as a guide, please write a critique of the video of the play Pipeline from the perspective of a theater critic. Since a critic is an informed viewer who provides insight and analysis, you are expected to read the script and conduct background research.

What is the difference between a reviewer and a critic?
As a reminder, a reviewer describes a production and gives their opinion on how well the production was done. They write for a general audience.
The drama critic, on the other hand, analyzes the play in greater detail and writes for an audience of theater people: scholars, directors, designers, and actors. It is assumed that a critic has a solid knowledge of theater history, dramatic literature, and theatrical production. A reviewer can be anyone with an opinion. Reviews are typically published in a newspaper, blog or magazine and broadcast on the 11 O’clock news; criticism appears in academic and theatrical journals.
Criteria:
Your paper should be a 1500 word minimum, which equates to around total 5 pages (not including bibliography). This is to be critique of the production of PIPELINE.
You are critiquing the production and not just the script. You do have to read the script and use that as reference point, but you are looking at the production choices such as the acting, the scenery, costumes, etc. You are to discuss why the production team made the choices that they did in order to bring the play to life. Are there portions of the production that differ from your image of the play?
Use the three critical questions as the criteria:
What are the three criteria for theatrical criticism?
Nineteenth century German playwright, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) established the three criteria of theatrical criticism:
What is the playwright [or production as a whole in our case] attempting to do?
Was it well done?
Was it worth doing?
For the purposes of your critique well alter the criteria slightly and phrase it this way:
What is being attempted (by the production as a whole)?
Was the goal achieved?
Was the attempt worthwhile?
Keep in mind that you are analyzing the choices made in the production: the acting, directing, and technical elements. Im not interested in whether you liked the show; I am interested in your analysis of why the production was put together the way it was.
You must perform background research on the play. Read the script, look for critical summaries, and explain the background and context of the play, playwright and producing-organization You are not to go in blindly and write an opinion paper. You must understand the script and the production in a larger context.
Use sources to:
Put the play in socio-historical context
Give background information on the playwright
Discuss the production history and clarify unclear aspects of the production
Provide a Works Cited page for the research you conduct and make sure you cite all work properly. Appropriate sources DO NOT include: any Wiki or source created by a questionable source. The program you receive is also not an appropriate source for this paper. Also, while your textbook may contain some hints to help you write your paper, it is not to be one of the mandatory sources.
Dont tell me what you dont know and leave it at that! If you think that a costume was not appropriate for the era in which the production was set, provide proof. If you believe that the production missed its mark, tell me why. What did the director intend as opposed to what the playwright intended?
Do not use slang, colloquialisms, exaggerations, or vulgar language. Saying a performance sucked,? kicked ass,? or was full of fill-in-the-blank? is not appropriate for an academic setting or scholarly critique. If you are quoting a specific line or incident in the play, use the language as written. In contrast, your response papers should reflect thoughtful and mature reflection. Dont tell me that the show was so great that the entire audience loved the performance? or vice-versa. I will quickly show you a colleagues paper that disagrees and mark you down for lying!
