Thesis Statements and Essay Structure A strong thesis statement o Is a specific claim youre trying to prove about your text and topic o Is arguable, has to be proven with evidence o Requires proof because it is not obvious o Is clear and guides the reader to your interpretation o Can change as you write and/or research Bad theses or statements mistaken for thesis statements o General statements of intent (Im going to write about Nora and Torvald in A Dolls House.) o The questions youre trying to answer (Why is everything so crazy in Ubu the King?) o Vague assertions (Concepts important in epic theatre are also important in Tony Kushners Angels in America.) o Obvious assertions, even if theyre true (Blanche is in danger in A Streetcar Named Desire.) o Preview of the essays content (I will discuss the importance of occupation, family, and the American dream in Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman.) o Untenable assertions not supported by the text (Waiting for Godot is a play in which Samuel Beckett shows us that good things come to those who wait.) Essay Structure o Introductory Paragraph ?? Introduce your topic. Try and hook your reader into your ideas ?? This paragraph includes your thesis statement. Keep it at one or two sentences. o Three Supporting Paragraphs ?? Present your arguments that support your thesis statement. Use quotes from your sources to provide evidence that your interpretation is viable. ?? You may find as you research that you are not finding enough evidence to support your thesis. This is ok! It means you may need to rethink your thesis or re-examine the evidence you are using to support it. ?? If you are finding too much evidence, you may need to narrow your thesis. Its easy to be too broad and try to cover too much. You have a limited number of words so you will need to make choices about what best supports your thesis. o Conclusion ?? Use this paragraph to summarize your evidence and reiterate why it supports your thesis. This is where you really hammer home the point you are trying to make. o Bibliography ?? Cite your sources using MLA formatting. Make sure you are using a variety of sources. Wikipedia is not a source, just a starting point.
