For this project, you will design a menu. A restaurants menu design is not only a critically important part of the restaurants ambiance, but it carries many practical considerations as well. First and foremost, the menu must be easy to read in the standard lighting conditions. You also want to design a menu to be flexible enough to easily add and remove items. In some cases, the menu needs to be replicated in a smaller, black-and-white version for takeout (although you will not do that here).
Menu Project Directions:
Create a new horizontal or vertical document that is the final size of the menu. This menu should be set up with more than one page. It can be printed as a two-sided single page document or you can create a menu that contains multiple pages to be bound in a book-style format. You can decide how the menu will be sized but it must contain at least two pages. Save the document as your last name_Menu.
Design the shell? of the menu by creating objects, applying colors, and importing any images you want to use. Be sure to include the logo and the restaurants contact information ?in case a customer (or restaurant reviewer!) takes the menu home.
When youre ready to add the menu text, create one or more text frames to contain the content. Divide the text frames into columns so you can see the baseline grid at work. (Choose Object > Text Frame Options).
Import or type your menu text. Format the heads and body text in the menu so the menu is easy to navigate and read. Select all the text and turn off hyphenation; choose the composition method for the paragraphs that looks best. Dont worry about the leading or space between paragraphs yet.
Create right-aligned or decimal-aligned tab stops with a leader character (such as …?) to set off prices in the menu (Type > Tabs).Note: Remember to choose Type > Show Hidden Characters to see the tabs. Now you need to set up the spacing for the menu.
Choose View > Grids & Guides > Show Baseline Grid to see the grid. You can snap? lines of text to these gridlines. To customize the spacing in the baseline grid, choose Preferences > Grids. The value in the Increment Every field should roughly equal the leading you prefer for the body text.
Select all the menu text, and select Align to Baseline Grid on the Control panel or on the Paragraph panel. Note that now the text aligns across columns. If necessary, you can adjust the baseline grid in Preferences.
Use the Text Frame Options dialog box (Object menu) to specify Auto-Size for a text frame that has a fill or stroke. Experiment with adding and removing text to see how the text frame resizes.
Use the Paragraph panel to apply a drop cap to at least one paragraph of body text. (It does not make much sense to use drop caps on menu listings.) If you want, highlight the drop cap characters and apply additional formatting.
Apply the Rule Above or Rule Below attribute to at least one paragraph. Use the Paragraph Rules option in the Paragraph panel menu.
Save the document and create a pdf export. Upload both files to Canvas.
Consider the following criteria before submitting your menu project:
Did you use fonts that are consistent with the restaurants character and logo?
Did you choose sizes for the heads and body text that make the menu easy to read?
Did you create a tab with a leader character and customized alignment?
Did you create multiple columns to see the baseline grid in action?
Is the baseline grid customized in Grid Preferences?
Are some paragraphs locked to the baseline grid?
Did you specify Auto-Size for a text frame that has a fill or stroke?
Is hyphenation turned off for all the paragraphs?
Did you create at least one drop cap?
Did you create at least one rule above or rule below?
