The Negative Effects of Genetically Modified Food
Introduction:
According to the Pew Research Center, 51% of U.S. adults believe that genetically modified foods are detrimental to people’s health compared to foods made without genetically modified components.[1] Genetically modified foods are a great concern for people around the world as they can have harmful effects on humans as well as on the environment. We have begun working on the project on the 10th of March 2023 and it is expected to be complete on Week 15. Furthermore, the students that are responsible for completing this project are Mohammad Fahad, Laith Abed Alhak, and Mohammad Hassan; in which this project will be submitted to our instructor of the Communication Skills? course, Dr. Sara. Moreover, this project is solely based on secondary research where evidence will be gathered from various internet sources and books. This report will include details about the process of the completion of the project such as what has been done by the members up until now, our current duties, and what we are planning to do in the future.
Project Status:
Work done:
When starting the project, we have scheduled a meeting on the 10th of March in which we will discuss our current topic as well as how we can move forward in distributing the work based on each members skills and preferences. This work was done up until the 21st of March before moving to the next phase of this project. Here was each members assigned work as well as their findings:
Mohammad Hassan was assigned to perform secondary research on the publics opinion on our topic from different sources such as websites, books, government publications, and articles; in which he has discovered that according to an article published by the Nature Food? research website, some genetically modified food might encounter strong resistance from consumers because they feel uncomfortable with eating food that is considered unnatural.[2]
Moreover, Mohammad Fahad has focused on the negative impacts of such food on the human body in which he has found some troubling information such as cancer development in human bodies, antibacterial resistance, and risk of having toxins that can harm vital organs, and the toxins that harm the bodys organs. For example, the Center for Food Safety? website has stated that scientists at The Food and Drug Administration have stated that genetically engineered food can have an increased level of toxicants in them that cause a risk to the consumers health.[3]
Furthermore, Laith Abed Alhak has done research on the negative effects of genetically modified food on the environment; in which this food not only affects humans but also affects the ecosystem that they are living in. For instance, according to the World Health Organization, loss of biodiversity is due to the risk of outcrossing, where genes from GMO foods spread into wild plants and other crops and have a negative effect on insects and other species.[4]
Present work:
After finishing our research, our current duty is to pick the most useful information that would back up our evidence regarding the adverse consequences of producing genetically modified foods on consumers and on the environment. To clarify, each group member is currently looking through their findings and providing the rest of the members with concrete evidence that can be implemented in the final project. This part of the project is expected to be done by the 30th of March 2023.
Future Work:
When it comes to our upcoming tasks, we are planning to complete our final research report by the end of April; in which we will distribute each part of the report based on what the member has done in the past. The group members have decided to organize a weekly meeting where they can follow up on their work and discuss any difficulties that they might have faced on their part. As a result, we have agreed that each member is responsible for finalizing their part of the research and writing it in the final report; in which Laith Abed Alhak is responsible for writing the reports draft, Mohammad Fahad is in charge of reviewing the first draft and editing or adding any information, and Mohammad Hassan will rewrite the written report in an organized manner and assemble it for submission.
Issues Encountered:
Throughout our work, we have faced a major issue in arranging meetings; in which one of the group members had a very tight schedule and was not able to meet with the rest of the group on campus. As a result, we have decided to have one online meeting on the weekend to discuss any concerns or new ideas. Additionally, we also took advantage of our WhatsApp group to provide each other with updates.
Gantts Chart:
Conclusion:
In conclusion, this report includes details of the groups work on the research project regarding the detrimental repercussions of genetically modified food on people as well as on the environment[5]. This project has begun on Week 7 and its estimated date of completion is Week 15. Moreover, the report explains the steps that the group members have taken up until this week and what their strategy is for the coming future; in which the completed work, current work, and detailed plans are stated in the report.
