PEER RESPONSE #1 ( 150-200 WORDS)
Using Kinzies modified framework of the Nine Events of Instruction? for the application of health promotion, provide an example of how these five stages (1. gain attention, 2. present stimulus material, 3. provide guidance, 4. elicit performance and provide feedback, and 5. enhance retention and transfer) can be applied to a health promotion topic of your choice. Which stage do you think is the most critical in health education? Are there any stages that you would remove, add, or replace?
Health education strategies use learning experiences to encourage voluntary behavioural change.1?These strategies typically have several objectives: (1) to disseminate information about a particular health topic; (2) to challenge the values, attitudes, and beliefs of the participants; (3) to achieve knowledge acquisition; and (4) to develop a set of skills necessary for behavioural/lifestyle changes.2?Health education strategies are different from health communication strategies, which generally involve the use of materials and resources (i.e.: brochures, pamphlets, and or media campaigns) for the purpose of informing the public about a particular health topic.1,2?Health education strategies often involve traditional learning methods (i.e.: classes, workshops, and seminars), and they are built around a comprehensive curriculum/lesson plan.1
In 1965, Robert Gagné proposed a framework consisting of nine steps? for constructing a learning experience. To make it more relevant for a public health context, the framework was later modified and reduced to five essential steps? (as opposed to the original nine): (1) gain attention; (2) present stimulus material; (3) provide guidance; (4) elicit performance and provide feedback; and (5) enhance retention and transfer.1
If one was to teach a lesson about vaping to a high-school class (with the goal of promoting smoking cessation), one could start with an attention-grabbing activity. For example, students can be challenged to write down what they know about vaping products (i.e.: what are the ingredients?) This activity can then lead to a larger discussion about vaping and the unintended consequences on health. The instructor can present information either through a PowerPoint presentation and or a video. Guest speakers can be invited to speak on the topic, as a way to present the materials in a more engaging manner. Then, the instructor can provide guidance on how to reject/refuse vaping products, which can be facilitated by an activity where students can practice this skill in a given scenario (i.e.: house party) with a peer. Following the conclusion of the activity, the class can reconvene and discuss the various scenarios that were presented (the instructor can give feedback based on observations). Lastly, as a way to enhance retention of knowledge, the instructor can provide a short brochure/pamphlet with information that the students can refer to later on (this resource can also offer questions and thoughts for the students to reflect on).
I think that there are two stages that are important: the presentation of materials and the providence of guidance. These steps are fundamental to any learning activity. Although, I think that grabbing the attention of participants is also important (otherwise, if you dont have their attention, they might not retain the information that is being presented to them). Of course the *way* information is presented can also make an impact. If an instructor/educator is simply lecturing but not really engaging the audience, the learning experience may not meet its objective.

PEER RESPONSE # 2 (150-200 WORDS)
Which step of the five steps of the segmentation process that planners use as a framework for conducting audience segmentation do you think is the most critical? Explain why using a health topic/priority population of your choice.
Segmentation is important to social marketing campaigns. If funding is limited, focusing on a group who you might have the most success with and who can possibly spread the word would be the best choice. Even if funding is not limited, you would not want to waste any resources trying to get a message across to a group who you know will never be interested. Outside of funding, making sure that your broad message is able to make an impact on and draw the attention of all groups is necessary.
I find the step of review[ing] data and literature to identify factors that influence whether people participate in the identified behavior? to be the most critical of the steps within the segmentation process (Grosskopf, 2023). This step will determine how you group your audience which will further help you choose the segments your cause will target. Deciding the programs focus is a step you would take regardless of segmentation. The same goes for the first step of reviewing research on the behaviors your original target audience affected by your chosen health topic may be participating in that is perpetuating the health issue.
For this example, the health topic will be diabetes complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, or nephropathy. After researching the behaviors that cause these complications and choosing a specific focus, I would have to look at more data to see what exactly impacts the decision making process for this original target audience of people who have or are facing diabetes complications. Who is more prone to diabetes complications? This step is where I would figure out if there are trends or similarities in age groups, race or ethnicity, locations, or even groups who may be more open to making a change. When it comes to diabetes, it is well known that older Black people are more impacted with complications. Therefore, I may find myself focusing on a population who is Black and in their 50s-60s.
